EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The IU Indy volleyball team was silenced by the Screaming Eagles of Southern Indiana, 3-0, on Saturday afternoon. Service errors proved costly as the Jags committed 14 errors at the service line, including match point. Junior
Morgan Ostrowski once again led the Jaguar attack with 12 kills.
In the opening set, IU Indy (5-7) took the lead with back-to-back service aces from
Briana Brown. The Jaguar lead didn't last long as USI quickly tied the match up with back-to-back kills. After back-and-forth ties, the Screaming Eagles took two points after a service and attack error from the Jags to take a 23-20 lead, forcing an IU Indy timeout. After the timeout, the Jags were only able to scratch away at the lead by one point, falling in set one, 25-21.
In set two, the Jags started gaining momentum, taking a 10-8 lead. That energy quickly deflated as the Jags committed another service error. USI used that error and went on a four-point run, taking the 12-10 lead. Once the Jags earned the serve back, they committed another service error, handing the serve back to the Screaming Eagles. After an attack error from USI, the Jags repeated the same thing with yet another service error, falling behind, 14-12.
Following the media timeout, Southern Indiana took three points in a row to force an IU Indy timeout. The Jags attempted to keep the set close but the Screaming Eagles took set two on a service error from IU Indy, 25-21.
Down 2-0, the Jags fell behind early in the third set and couldn't recover as Southern Indiana held control of the entire third set. IU Indy earned the serve with a kill from Ostrowski at 24-17 but with match point on the line for USI, the Jags recorded a service error to end the set and match at 25-17.
IU Indy will wrap up the weekend tomorrow, Sunday, Sept. 22 when they face Evansville. The Jags and Aces are set for a 3:00 PM ET first serve.
