WOMEN'S SOCCER TO OPEN HORIZON LEAGUE PLAY WITH CLEVELAND STATE

Jaguars to host Vikings at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday (Sept. 22)

INDIANAPOLIS - The IU Indianapolis women's soccer team will open Horizon League play on Sunday (Sept. 22) when the Jaguars host Cleveland State at 1:00 p.m. at Michael A. Carroll Stadium. 

The Jaguars closed non-conference play with a 1-6-1 mark and 1-1-1 record at home with a victory over Eastern Illinois. In its most recent outing, the Jaguars were dumped by Ball State, 6-2, on Sept. 12 ahead of the 10-day gap between contests. The short-handed Jaguars utilized just four substitutes in the field in the loss to the Cards with five starters played at least 80 minutes. Sophomore Shannon Ott tallied her first score of the year in the first half off assists from Caroline Kelley and Emma Frey in the game's 23rd minute. Senior Cassie Rodriguez netted a score in the 60th minute off an assist from Maia Ransom to close the team's scoring. 

Kelley currently leads the team with three goals while both Frey and Ransom have three assists each. Rodriguez is second on the team with a pair of goals and Frey, Ott and Ella Gree each have one tally. In goal, senior Ashton Kudlo has played the bulk of the team's minutes, recording a 2.15 goals against average and .702 save percentage. Behind her, Emily Keck has made three appearances with a 2.67 GAA. 

Frey leads the field players in minutes played (705) while sophomore Katie Hoog has been a mainstay on the back line with 688 minutes. Ransom and Kelley each have topped 600 minutes so far on the season and both have split time between forward and defensive positions.

Ransom began her career at Cleveland State, playing her first two seasons and 26 total matches in a Viking uniform. She had three goals, including two game-winners, in 2021 for Cleveland State in making 18 starts. 

SCOUTING CLEVELAND STATE: CSU enters this week at 0-6-1 on the season and plays at Purdue Fort Wayne on Thursday (Sept. 19). The Vikings have been outscored 16-3 on the season and outshot by six attempts per game. Mayra Sesmas leads the CSU attack with a goal and an assist while Madison Ott has played all 630 minutes in net with a 2.29 goals against average and .709 save percentage. The Vikings lone result of the year is a 1-1 draw at Saint Francis on Sept. 1. 

SERIES RESULTS: The Jaguars are 7-5-2 all-time against Cleveland State and 6-1-2 in nine meetings in Indianapolis. The two teams played to a 2-2 draw in Indianapolis last season as Kelley and Rodriguez tallied goals for the Jaguars. 

UP NEXT: The Jaguars will hit the road for a two-game trip to face Youngstown State (Sept. 26) and Robert Morris (Sept. 29) in Horizon League play.
