VOLLEYBALL EARNS FIRST VICTORY OF THE SEASON

The Jags took down SIUE in a five set battle, 3-2

INDIANAPOLIS – The IU Indy volleyball team heard the victory song play for the first time this season after defeating the SIUE Cougars on day two of the Hampton Inn Invitational. The Jags defeated SIUE in a five set battle, 3-2.

IU Indy attacked early, earning a dominate first set victory, 25-14. The Jags totaled 26 attempts, totaling 13 kills for a .423 hitting percentage in the opening set. After a 6-6 tie, IU Indy set the tone for the rest of the set when they went on a four point run, forcing a SIUE timeout. After the timeout, the Jags took two more points, extending their lead to 12-6.

After the first set victory, the Jags fell behind early in set two. The Cougars took the first four points and held onto the lead until IU Indy tied the set at 20-20, after a five point run. SIUE retook the lead two more times before the Jags tied the game at 23-23 with a kill from Maia Long. IU Indy then closed out the 25-23 set win with a kill from Ava Harris and an ace from Long.

The Jags hit a bit of a slump in the third set, hitting just .086 which allowed the Cougars to capitalize and extend the match, 25-17. IU Indy still struggled on the attack in the fourth set as well, hitting .086. SIUE tied the match at two sets each after a fourth set victory, 25-20.

IU Indy was not letting this match go as they took a quick 3-1 lead in the fifth set. A few points later, the Jags went on a five point run to take their biggest lead of the set at 9-3. Morgan Ostrowski added a kill in the run. After a kill from Carly Doros set the Jags up for match point, SIUE took three straight points to keep things close at 14-12. The Cougars comeback proved no match for the Jags as Elle Patterson recorded a kill to seal IU Indy's first win of the season, 15-12.

Patterson once again led the Jaguars' offense with 17 kills followed by Ostrowski with 13 and Doros with 12. Grace Purichia collected 52 assists with Addie Evans leading the defense with 15 digs.

IU Indy will next host Valparaiso tomorrow, Sunday, September 1 as they close out the Hampton Inn Invitational with a 2:00 PM first serve.
