SOFTBALL EARNS SATURDAY DOUBLEHEADER SWEEP OVER TITANS

Alexa Holman and Carly Metcalf each earned wins in the circle

INDIANAPOLIS – The IUPUI softball team got back in the win column on Saturday after earning a doubleheader sweep over Detroit Mercy. The Jags defeated the Titans in back-to-back games with a score of 2-1 in each game.

In game one, the Jags took the early lead in the second inning with a two RBI double from Kayla Freiberg to score Kasie Keyes and Morgan Gilbert.

The Titans cut the lead in half with one run in the top of the third inning, 2-1.

With just a one run difference, Detroit Mercy threatened in the top of the seventh inning. The Titans had runners on first and second with just one out but starting pitcher Alexa Holman forced back-to-back popups to finish the game.

Holman took the win in the circle for IUPUI, giving up just one run on five hits with nine strikeouts in 7.0 innings of work. Paige McPhearson went 2-for-3 while Keyes, Freiberg, Kendal Calvert, and Kelli Riordan each added a hit.

After winning game one the Jags doubled down and took game two with the same score of 2-1. This time the Titans took the early lead with one run in the top of the first, 1-0.

IUPUI tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning. Calvert started the inning off with a single through the left side. After an out and a stolen base, Calvert was on third base for Kennedy Cowan at the plate. Cowan grounded out but collected the RBI as Calvert came in to score.

The Jags took the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning. Rachael Gregory knocked a lead off double followed by a sac bunt from Calvert to move Gregory to third. McPhearson then singled up the middle to score Gregory and give the Jags the 2-1 lead.

The Titans once again threatened in the top of the seventh with a runner on third with two outs. Starting pitcher Carly Metcalf closed out the final frame to earn the win.

Metcalf took the win in the circle with a dominant 10 strikeouts. She gave up just one run on four hits in 7.0 innings of work. Gregory, Calvert, McPhearson, Cowan and Freiberg all recorded a hit for the Jags.

IUPUI and Detroit Mercy will close out the three-game series tomorrow, Saturday, April 7 with a single game at 11:00 AM.
