FORT WAYNE – The IUPUI softball team fell in the series finale to Purdue Fort Wayne on Sunday afternoon, 6-2. The Jags totaled nine hits in the loss.
IUPUI got on the board first in the top of the first inning with one run. With the bases loaded,
Paige McPhearson walked scoring
Kendal Calvert to give the Jags the early edge, 1-0.
The Mastodons responded in the bottom of the opening frame with three runs to take the 3-1 lead. Purdue Fort Wayne added one run in the bottom of the second inning to extend their lead, 4-1.
The Jags cut the deficit to just two runs with a run in the top of the fifth inning.
Kennedy Cowan singled through the left side to score Calvert, 4-2. Once again the Mastodons answered quickly with two runs in the bottom of the fifth to seal the final score at 6-2.
Alexa Holman took the loss in the circle giving up six runs (four earned) on nine hits with two strikeouts in 5.0 innings of work. Calvert led the Jags at the plate going 3-for-4 with two runs while Cowan added two hits.
Morgan Gilbert,
Jordan Barnes, McPhearson and
Victoria Sivert all added one hit each.
IUPUI will now travel to Rochester, Michigan to face the Oakland Golden Grizzlies. The Jags and Golden Grizzlies will play a doubleheader on Wednesday, April 17. The first pitch of game one is set for 1:00 PM.
