JAGS FALL TO FLYERS ON DAY ONE OF INDIANA INVITE

Calvert went 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs and RBI

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The IUPUI softball team fell to the Dayton Flyers in game one of the Indiana Invite on Saturday evening, 13-3. IUPUI stayed in the game until the fifth inning when Dayton scored four runs to safely put the game away.
 
The Jags jumped on the board first in the bottom of the first inning when IUPUI's starting pitcher, Alexa Holman hit a sacrifice fly to score Kendal Calvert, 1-0. In the bottom of the third inning, Calvert reached safely for the second time with a single. She would later score the second IUPUI run of the night as she stole home, 2-0.
 
The Flyers were held scoreless until the top of the fourth inning when they scored three runs on four hits, taking the lead at 3-2. IUPUI answered in the bottom half of the inning. Kasie Keyes knocked a leadoff single then advanced to third after a sac bunt and groundout. With two outs and Keyes on third, Calvert singled through the right side to tie the game at 3-3.
 
In the top of the fifth inning, the Jags defense started to unravel as the Flyers scored four runs on three hits and two IUPUI errors. Dayton took the 7-3 lead and never looked back. They scored three runs in the sixth inning and three in the seventh while holding the Jags scoreless to earn the victory 13-3.
 
Calvert led the Jags offense going 3-for-4 with two runs and one RBI. Keyes added two hits while Kinsey Pfeiffer and Rachael Gregory each added one hit. Holman took the loss on the mound giving up seven runs (two unearned) on 10 hits in five innings of work.
 
IUPUI will next face Indiana on day two of the Indiana Invite on Sunday, March 9 at 1:30 PM followed by Dayton at 4:00 PM.
