MOON TOWNSHIP, PA. – The IUPUI softball team fell to the Colonials in the opening game of the three-game series on Thursday. The Jags went hit-for-hit with the Colonials but Robert Morris took the slight edge at 10-9.
The Colonials (7-13, 2-2 HL) took the early lead in the bottom of the first inning with an RBI single, 1-0. They extended their lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the second with three runs on three hits.
Paige McPhearson put the Jags on the board with a triple in the third inning, scoring
Rachael Gregory and
Kendal Calvert, cutting RMU's lead to 4-2.
Robert Morris added one run in the fourth inning off a wild pitch, but the Jaguars answered in the top of the fifth. IUPUI scored four runs on four hits to take the lead at 6-5.
Kelli Riordan led the fifth inning off with a walk followed by a single from Gregory. Calvert loaded the bases with a single to left field with no outs. McPhearson singled to center field to score Riordan then
Kennedy Cowan doubled to center field to clear the bases and give the Jags the 6-5 lead.
IUPUI added three runs in the top of the sixth inning to extend their lead to 9-5.
Victoria Sivert started the inning off with a single followed by a single from Gregory to put runners at first and second with one out. Calvert doubled to center field to score
Emma Wheatley who came in to pinch run for Sivert. Cowan singled to center field to score Calvert and Gregory.
Robert Morris came back in the bottom of the sixth frame to take the lead with five runs on five hits, 10-9.
The Colonials then shut out the Jags in the seventh inning to secure the win.
Gregory and Calvert each recorded three hits in the loss while Cowan knocked two hits and five RBI. McPhearson added three RBI on two hits.
Kasie Keyes and Sivert added one hit each.
Isabelle Waggner took the loss in the circle for IUPUI giving up one run on two hits in one inning of work.
Alexa Holman started for the Jags and gave up nine runs on ten hits in five innings.
The Jags are now 5-24 overall and 1-3 in Horizon League play. They continue the three-game series on Friday with a doubleheader at 1:00 PM.
