STARKVILLE, Miss. – The IUPUI softball team fell in back-to-back games in the final day of the Mississippi State Snowman tournament. The Jags fell to UAB in the first game then fell to Mississippi State to conclude the day.
The Jags opened day two against UAB, who they previously defeated on Friday with a score of 2-1. IUPUI's offense totaled four hits but couldn't string any together to score a run falling, 11-0 in five innings. Three different pitchers saw the mound for the Jags with freshman
Kaylen Garland (L, 0-1) taking the loss.
UAB took the early lead in the first inning with a three run home run by Lindsey Smith. The Jags had a chance to get on the board in the top of the second inning with a two-out single from freshman
Paige McPhearson followed by a double from
Kasie Keyes. Both runners were stranded after a strikeout.
IUPUI put runners on first and second after a single by
Morgan Gilbert and a walk drawn by
Rachael Gregory in the top of the third, but the Jags couldn't push them across the plate.
Smith extended UAB's lead in the third inning with a two run double, 5-0. They added four more runs in the third inning with an RBI single and three run homer to take a 9-0 lead. UAB added two more runs in the fourth with a two-run homer to take a 11-0 lead.
The Jags couldn't overcome the deficit and fell in five innings, 11-0. Keyes led the Jaguars offense going 2-for-2 at the plate with two doubles. Gilbert and McPhearson recorded the other two hits for IUPUI. Garland took the loss giving up six runs on two hits with four walks in 2.1 innings of work.
In game two, the Jags went hitless against Mississippi State falling, 10-0.
Carly Metcalf (L, 1-1) took the loss in three innings of work.
Mississippi State scored eight runs in the second inning on three hits and four walks to take the early lead. They added one run in the third inning on a fielding error by the Jags then extended their lead to 10-0 with one run in the fourth inning.
IUPUI couldn't heat up their bats and had just one base runner during the game, after
Kelli Riordan reached on a throwing error in the second inning.
Metcalf took the loss giving up nine runs on four hits with six walks in 3.0 innings of work.
