GREEN BAY, Wisc. - IUPUI senior
John Egbuta matched his career-high with 15 points and classmate
Bryce Monroe finished with 12 but the Jaguars fell on the road to Horizon League leader Green Bay on Thursday (Feb. 1), 79-56. IUPUI shot 49 percent from the floor and outrebounded the Phoenix by a 33-30 margin, but turned the ball over 21 times in the defeat.
IUPUI (6-18, 2-11 HL) led 34-30 with 2:21 to play before halftime when Monroe scored in transition, but Green Bay (15-9, 10-3 HL) put the clamps on the Jaguars from there. The Phoenix scored the final six points of the first half to take a 36-34 advantage to the locker room and then outscored the Jags 22-6 to open the second half and blow the game open.
The first half featured seven ties and five lead changes as IUPUI used a 7-0 burst to take a 34-30 lead. Egbuta started the run with a short jumper and
Cooper Dewitt followed by swishing an open three from the right wing. Moments later,
DJ Jackson collected a steal near midcourt, setting up Monroe's easy layup, prompting a Green Bay timeout. The Phoenix responded with a pair of treys - one from Foster Wonders and one from Nick Reynolds - to retake the lead.
Reynolds scored 17 of his 19 points in the first half while IUPUI shot 57.7 percent from the field in the opening stanza to stay close.
After Monroe tied the score at 36 all on a midrange jumper to start the second half, Green Bay retaliated with nine straight points, primarily from Clarence Cummings III, to seize control.
Green Bay finished the game at 47 percent from the field and 11-of-31 (35.5 percent) from three while IUPUI shot 49 percent, but just 2-of-8 (25 percent) from three-point range. The typically dependable charity stripe also betrayed IUPUI on Thursday as the Jaguars made just 6-of-12 attempts.
IUPUI's 21 turnovers led to 25 Green Bay points and were more staggering as the Jaguars were coming off a season-low six turnovers in their last outing. IUPUI scored just six points of eight Green Bay miscues.
Egbuta made 6-of-8 shots and grabbed five boards while Monroe was 6-of-11 shooting and delivered three assists. Junior
Kidtrell Blocker added 10 points and six rebounds and
Qwanzi Samuels added six points and six boards. IUPUI played without top scorer
Jlynn Counter, who was sidelined due to injury.
David Douglas Jr. had a game-high 20 points off the Green Bay bench and Rich Byhre closed with 13.
IUPUI will cap the two-game roadtrip at Milwaukee on Sunday (Feb. 4) at 2:00 p.m. CT (3 Eastern) on ESPN+.
