DAYTON, Ohio – The IU Indy volleyball team fell in the opening round of the Horizon League tournament to the Cleveland State Vikings on Friday afternoon, 3-0. Sophomore
Elle Patterson led the attack with 12 kills while
Maia Long added 10.
The Jags started off with a bang with
Carly Doros slamming a kill to open the match. The Vikings quickly jumped back ultimately taking the lead and the set at 25-22. Although the Jags recorded their highest hitting percentage of the match at .289, the Vikings came out stronger with a .412 hitting percentage.
In the second set, the Jags offense stumbled, hitting just .068 with nine kills. Cleveland State took advantage of the Jaguars' miscues, taking a 2-0 match lead at 25-22.
In the third set, IU Indy fought until the end, pushing the set into extra points but the Vikings took the set and match at 29-27. The Jags fought to tie the score late in the match but IU Indy errors at the service line allowed Cleveland State to stay within striking distance. Patterson kept the Jags in the match as long as possible with two kills but the Vikings closed out the third set with back-to-back kills from Nia Hall to seal the match at 29-27.
Patterson led the Jags with 12 kills while Long added 10 and
Morgan Ostrowski hit .438 with eight kills.
Grace Purichia led in assists with 40 while Long and Patterson each totaled 15 digs.
The Jags cap off the season with a 15-17 overall record, making the tournament for the first time since 2017.
