JAGUARS TAKE PENGUINS TO THE WIRE BEFORE FALLING, 75-65

Host Penguins close the game on a 10-2 run

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - The IUPUI basketball team played Youngstown State to the wire on Sunday (Jan. 7) but ultimately fell to the host Penguins inside Beeghly Center, 75-65. The Jaguars made a season-high eight threes, but were derailed by 28 turnovers that led to 33 YSU points.

Vincent Brady II scored a season-high 18 points, including hitting 4-of-6 from three, while Bryce Monroe added 14 points, seven assists and six rebounds in the loss. Junior Jlynn Counter tallied 11 points off the IUPUI bench and Qwanzi Samuels just missed a double-double with nine points and a career-high 13 rebounds.

Brett Thompson had a game-high 20 points for the Penguins and Ziggy Reid added 14 points and seven rebounds.

IUPUI (5-12, 1-5 HL) held Youngstown State to just 38.4 percent shooting and 9-of-31 (29 percent) from three-point range, but allowed the hosts 20 more field goal attempts because of the glut of turnovers.

Counter capped a quick 6-0 run with a driving layup with 4:35 left to cut YSU's lead back to 65-63, but Thompson responded with a drive of his own to make it a two-possession game. IUPUI went empty on its next two offensive trips and YSU got back-to-back Reid jumpers to essentially seal the game.

IUPUI battled from behind for much of the day, trailing by as many as six in the opening half before rallying for a 32-31 halftime advantage. Brady closed the first half by stroking a trey off a feed from Cooper Dewitt

YSU opened the second half with a 7-0 run, but IUPUI responded with seven straight of its own to regain a 39-38 lead. The game was tied at 47 all and 50 all before John Lovelace Jr. put the hosts ahead for good with a trey with 10:50 left.

IUPUI did more good than bad, shooting 46.3 percent from the floor and 8-of-18 (44.4 percent) from three, while winning the glass by a 45-33 margin. However, the 28 turnovers proved insurmountable as six different Jaguars had at least three miscues.

Sophomore Abdou Samb finished with six points and five rebounds before fouling out and John Egbuta added five points and five rebounds off the bench.

The Jaguars will return home to open a two-game homestand on Wednesday (Jan. 10) when they host Green Bay at noon inside Indiana Farmers Coliseum on a Corporate Luncheon Day.
