FORT WAYNE, Ind. - IUPUI shot a season-high 59 percent from the floor and put five players in double-figures as the Jaguars went on the road and picked off Purdue Fort Wayne, 85-79. Junior
Jlynn Counter led the way with 18 points and four assists while
DJ Jackson added 17 points off the bench.
IUPUI (6-14, 2-7 HL) held the typically sharpshooting Mastodons to just 7-of-25 (28 percent) from long range.
"Huge road win for us, obviously," head coach
Matt Crenshaw said. "The guys executed and we got enough (defensive) stops, especially at key times. This was a true team win. Every guy played their role and that's what has to happen to win on the road."
Purdue Fort Wayne (13-6, 4-4 HL) made its first five shot attempts of the game in building a quick 11-2 lead. However, the Jaguars found some footing, including a
Vincent Brady II wing three before
DJ Jackson began shouldering the load offensively. It was IUPUI that was relentless from that point, turning the tides with an 18-2 run to build a 25-16 advantage at the 8:19 mark when
Abdou Samb dropped in a tough layup from the right block. Moments earlier,
Qwanzi Samuels got free in transition for an impressive one-handed slam after Jackson had collected a steal near midcourt.
IUPUI's largest lead of the opening half came at the 3:40 mark when Counter scored in transition.
After leading by eight at the break, the Jaguars rebuilt a double-digit lead with back-to-back buckets to start the second half, but then weathered an expected Mastodon storm for much of the second half. However, the Jaguars never relinquished the lead at any point, despite the hosts making it a one-possession game numerous times.
The Mastodons were within two with 11:37 to play when Rasheed Bello scored on a drive, but Counter later responded with a tough drive of his own. IUPUI pushed out to a double-digit lead with 4:16 to play when
Bryce Monroe scored on a drive and fended off the 'Dons down the stretch.
IUPUI attempted just five treys, knocking down three, instead opting to penetrate and work inside the arc. The end result was a 58-42 advantage in points in the paint and 38-28 rebound margin.
Samb finished with a career-high 13 points on 6-of-10 shooting and Brady closed with 12, including a pair of threes. Monroe had 10 points, five rebounds and four assists and Samuels just missed a double-double with nine points and 10 boards.
Jalen Jackson paced three Mastodons in double-digits with 22 points and Bello scored 19.
The Jaguars will return home to open a three-game homestand on Saturday (Jan. 20) when they host Robert Morris at noon inside Indiana Farmers Coliseum on Cram the Coliseum Day. The first 150 fans will receive a FREE IUPUI cross body bag for their attendance. Saturday's game will be broadcast on ESPN+ as Greg Rakestraw (pxp) and IUPUI Hall of Famer Bob Lovell (analyst) call the action.
