INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI basketball team got off to a poor start and never fully recovered as the Jaguars fell at home to a red hot Oakland squad, 88-66 inside Indiana Farmers Coliseum on Saturday (Jan. 13). Junior
Jlynn Counter led the Jaguars with 17 points and
Bryce Monroe added 16 in the loss.
DQ Cole paced six Oakland (11-8, 6-2 HL) players in double-digits with 19 points and eight boards while Rocket Watts added 16 off the Oakland bench. Oakland shot a blistering 54.4 percent from the floor and 42.9 percent from three-point range in winning its fifth straight contest.
Oakland scored the game's first 11 points and never let off the gas, leading by as many as 23 in the opening half.
IUPUI crept within 14 on multiple occasions in the second half, but the final two times, Oakland responded with Blake Lampman threes to quell any momentum.
The Jaguars struggled to build any major runs as the Golden Grizzlies rebounded 13 of their own misses, leading to 17 second chance points. OU won the glass by a 35-20 margin as Counter and
Vincent Brady II each led IUPUI with five rebounds each.
DJ Jackson supplied nine points, four assists and three steals off the bench and Brady,
Abdou Samb and
Qwanzi Samuels added eight points each.
IUPUI finished the game at 43.1 percent from the field and 43 percent from three-point range.
The Jaguars will return to action on Wednesday (Jan. 17) at Purdue Fort Wayne at 7:00 p.m.
