INDIANAPOLIS – In a mid-week non-conference matchup that saw the Jags without their head coach
Sid van Druenen due to illness, visiting Loyola Chicago would tally three second half goals to win 5-0 on Tuesday (Sept. 12) evening.
"In the first half we did well. The chances were there but we didn't capitalize. (The game) kind of slowed down for us when we saw them capitalize on their two chances," stated assistant coach
Arturo Rodriguez following the match. "The guys that came off the bench did well and added a little bit of life (in the second half) and we saw things from some guys that we haven't seen."
After both teams settled into the match, IUPUI (2-3-1) looked to get on the board first, with
Logan Finnegan rattling the crossbar and
Lukas Hackaa also registering a shot on goal.
However, Loyola (3-1-1) would open the scoring in the 22nd minute. Oscar Dueso sent in a low driven cross from the left wing that went all the way through the box to teammate Andrew Schweinert who slotted the ball passed a diving
Lucas Morefield.
The Jags continued to look dangerous in the attack but were unable to capitalize on scoring chances.
The Ramblers would double their lead in the closing minutes of the first half. After forcing a turnover just outside the 18-yard box in the middle of the field,
Medard Mikobi brought down Markus Maurer forcing the referee to award a penalty. Maurer was calm from the spot, chipping the ball down the middle after Morefield dove.
Out of the break the Jags came out on the front foot, looking to chip away at the Rambler lead.
Emerson Nieto, who started the second half, was a catalyst for the IUPUI attack, generating an early chance that saw his shot sail just wide.
Shortly after, Loyola would materialize another opportunity, increasing the advantage to three just over ten minutes into the second stanza. Peter Janjic—the scorer of the third goal—would add a second to secure his brace in the 74th minute, the first in his young career.
Despite out possessing the Ramblers in the second half, the Jags were unable to break down the defense and were limited to just three shots in the second 45.
Loyola added a fifth and final goal with just 21 seconds remaining in regulation, with Ethan Young following up on Jack McFeely shot that was pushed aside by Morefield, passing it into the empty net.
IUPUI returns to Horizon League play this weekend, traveling to Robert Morris on Saturday (Sept. 16). Kickoff is set for 2:00 p.m. with the match being streamed on ESPN+.
