JAGUARS BLANK ROBERT MORRIS ON THE ROAD, 1-0

Sophomore Josemir Gomez tallies the game's only goal in the 63rd minute

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. - The IUPUI men's soccer team dialed up an impressive shutout and captured a full three points on the road with a 1-0 defeat of Robert Morris on Saturday (Sept. 16). Goalkeeper Lucas Morefield registered his ninth career clean sheet in goal and redshirt sophomore Josemir Gomez provided the day's only offense in the 63rd minute with a snipe from in close. The victory kept the Jaguars perfect in Horizon League play at 2-0 to start the year.

"I'm proud of the effort and performance from the team today," head coach Sid van Druenen said. "Wins and clean sheets on the road are hard to come by and today we did both. Our defensive work rate and energy were phenomenal and at times we looked really good on the ball as well.

"I hope we can now make that a consistent thing in our games going forward."

The IUPUI (3-3-1, 2-0 HL) defense stayed organized and disciplined in front of Morefield throughout, limiting the RMU (3-2-2, 1-1 HL) scoring opportunities. The Colonials were held to just one shot on goal and 10 total attempts. Morefield made a brilliant stop of the lone attempt on goal, flying to push John Paul Mbuthia's attempt over the bar in the 77th minute.

Offensively, IUPUI started turning up the heat late in the first half and carried the pressure over to the second half. The Jaguars finally broke through in the 63rd minute when RMU was unable to send the ball out of danger against a persistent IUPUI flurry. Ultimately, sophomore Dominic Breidenbach headed the ball to Gomez deep inside the 18-yard box. Gomez was able to quickly spin and send a shot past RMU's Josh Lane for his second score of the season.

And while RMU was credited with a distinct 57-43 advantage in possession, IUPUI fired off 13 shots, putting four on target. Senior Lukas Hackaa attempted a team-high five shots, including multiple looks from near midfield as he tried to catch Lane off his line from long distance.

Gomez closed with three shot attempts and Logan Finnegan had two, including a near miss wide of the far post in the opening minute of the second half.

"This is a massive win. Three points on the road are very hard to obtain. The team fought until the very end and we got the result," Gomez said. "Now we have to focus for Saturday's game."

IUPUI will return home to host Oakland on Saturday, Sept. 23 at 1:00 p.m. at Michael A. Carroll Stadium in a match that will be broadcast on ESPN+.
