INDIANAPOLIS – The IUPUI volleyball team closed out the 2023 season with a 3-0 loss to Wright State on Saturday, November 11. The Jags also celebrated their two seniors,
Emily Alan and
Brooke Phillips.
Senior Alan opened up the match with a kill to give the Jags the lead to start the first set. The Jaguar lead didn't last long as the Raiders went on a 5-0 run to take the lead. Despite IUPUI keeping the game within a couple points for most of the set, Wright State started to pull away with four straight points at 17-11. IUPUI added a few kills from
Kate White and
Ava Harris late in the set but it wasn't enough as the Raiders closed out set one, 25-17.
Wright State held control in the second set with just two attack errors compared to the Jaguar's 12. With the low hitting percentage, the Jags couldn't string together a good run and fell in set two, 25-13.
With the match on the line, the Jags came out fighting in the third set, recording their best hitting percentage of the night at .281. IUPUI held on to the lead until Wright State tied the match up at 9-9. After a couple quick exchanges of the lead, the Raiders extended the lead to two at 18-16. The Jags wouldn't give up as they recorded back-to-back points with a kill from
Briana Brown to tie it up at 18-18.
After a few more back-and-forth points,
Maia Long recorded a kill to keep the Jaguars in the fight at 21-21. The Raiders quickly regrouped and the Jags couldn't counter as IUPUI fell in the third and final match, 25-22.
White finished the night with eight kills while Alan added seven.
Grace Purichia and
Brooke Phillips each totaled 12 assists while
Addie Evans added 15 digs.
IUPUI finished the season 9-20 overall and 3-15 in Horizon League play.
