INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI women's soccer team ripped off another shutout and got a welcome sight in the occurrence of some goals as the Jaguars rolled past Murray State on Thursday night (Sept. 8), 2-0.
Ashton Kudlo and
Cailynn Junk shared another clean sheet in goal and
Maya Lacognato and
Emma Antoine powered the offense as IUPUI remained unbeaten through six games.
"I thought we continued to make it difficult for people to get in behind us and to score goals and to really get quality opportunities. I thought Maya (Turner), Sophia (White), Kenna (Collins) and
Alex Stocker did a great job of really keeping things in front of them and I thought the midfield did a great job of pressuring the ball and the forwards did too," head coach
Chris Johnson said.
"The players realize that we're getting a little bit better each game, but we're not as good as we can be or as good as we want to be, but we're getting a little bit better each game."
IUPUI (3-0-3) opened the scoring in the 20th minute when Lacognato deposited her third goal of the season and 12th of her career. Freshman
Sarah Henson played a cross towards the near post where Lacognato banged a shot off a defender and just inside the post. The Jaguars took a 1-0 lead to the break after a dominating first 45 minutes in which they outshot Murray State (0-5-1) by a 7-2 margin and controlled better than 62 percent of the possession.
Murray State gained some steam early in the second half against the IUPUI defense, but couldn't get anything past Junk. The freshman made a smothering save in the 61st minute, just ahead of Antoine tallying an insurance score. Like the Jaguars' first goal, Henson sent in a cross from the right side and an errant clearance from a Murray State defender had to be deflected off the bar by MSU goalkeeper Jenna Villacres. The ball sat seemingly frozen in time on the goal line before Antoine beat Villacres and a Murray State defender to the spot and bashed a score into an empty net.
Junk finished off the shutout while the IUPUI defensive third limited Murray State to just five total attempts and three on frame. Murray State was limited to just one corner kick while the Jags earned six.
Junior
Sam Slimak fired a game-high three shots and Lacognato and
Alex Ludolph had two apiece.
"I think we're just really good at communicating with each other and I think all our team bonding is just really coming together and just shown on the field,"
Kailyn Smith said following the shutout. "All around, we just have really good team chemistry on the field."
IUPUI recorded a fifth shutout in the season's first six games and extended its scoreless streak to 395 straight minutes, dating back to Aug. 21.
IUPUI will cap its non-conference slate on Sunday (Sept. 11) when the Jaguars host Evansville at Michael A. Carroll Stadium at 4:00 p.m..
