INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI women's soccer team ran its unbeaten streak to seven-in-a-row and its shutout streak to five straight as the Jaguars delivered a 2-0 win over Evansville at Michael A. Carroll on Sunday (Sept. 11). IUPUI (4-0-3) got second half scores from
Emma Frey and
Maya Lacognato and sophomore goalkeeper
Ashton Kudlo continued her shutout streak in net as the Jaguars concluded their non-conference portion of their slate unbeaten.
"It felt good," Frey said of the win. "I feel like we're really starting to connect as a team more and we're really starting to take opportunities that we weren't doing at the beginning (of the season), so we're really taking our chances farther."
The rock solid IUPUI back line continued to limit opponents opportunities on Sunday, holding Evansville to just seven shots and just four on frame. Conversely, once IUPUI opened the scoring in the 52nd minute, the proverbial dam broke on the Purple Aces as the Jaguars closed with a 22-7 shot advantage and 9-4 margin in shots on goal.
IUPUI weathered a brief Evansville offensive storm to open the second half before Frey initiated the scoring by getting free up the left side off a pass from
Makenna Collins. Frey did the rest, angling towards goal before driving a shot past UE keeper Sophie Lindner, just inside the near post for her second score of the year.
"My initial thought was just to take it down line and then find someone back post, but then I noticed that she was giving me the whole front side of the goal, so I just it, cut it inside and went to goal," Frey said of her game-winner.
In the 54th minute, Lacognato netted her team-high fourth goal of the season, thanks to a cross from
Alex Ludolph. Ludolph sent a ball into danger from the right side, leading to Lacognato's smash from roughly eight yards out.
IUPUI outshot Evansville 15-5 in the second half as Lacognato finished with six shots and
Sam Slimak had four attempts. Lindner recorded six saves and a defensive teammate cleared a Ludolph attempt off the line in the 19th minute for a team save. Kudlo, her opposite number, recorded four saves in her third shutout of the season and extended her personal scoreless streak to 381 straight minutes, marking the fourth longest streak in school history.
Kudlo lowered her goals against average to 0.34 on the season while upping her save percentage to .909. Collectively, the Jaguars have earned six shutouts in their seven outings this season.
IUPUI will now open Horizon League play on Thursday, Sept. 15 when the Jaguars host Cleveland State at 6:00 p.m. at Carroll Stadium.
