NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The IUPUI women's soccer team will embark on a two-game road swing over the Labor Day weekend with road matches at Belmont on Friday (Sept. 2) and a trip to Southern Indiana on Monday (Sept. 5). The Jaguars remain unblemished on the 2022 season with a 2-0-2 mark, including road wins at Tennessee Tech and SIUE.
IUPUI (2-0-2) has opened the season with three shutouts in its first four games, including back-to-back clean sheets against Bellarmine and Western Illinois last week. The defense has been incredibly stingy, yielding just 13 shots in the last two matches combined, with only six of those shots on frame. Sophomore
Ashton Kudlo went the distance in goal in the shutout of Bellarmine while she and freshman
Cailynn Junk shared the shutout against Western Illinois.
It marked the third time in the past four seasons that the IUPUI defense has begun the season with three shutouts in its first four games.
Offensively, senior
Maya Lacognato continues to pace the attack with a pair of goals and freshman
Emma Frey has a goal and an assist. Lacognato,
Alex Ludolph and
Sam Slimak are tied atop the team lead with seven shot attempts each as IUPUI has outshot opponents by a 43-36 margin. However, just 16 of the team's 43 shots have been on target for a .372 SOG%. IUPUI opponents have put better than 47 percent of their attempts on frame, however Kudlo and Junk have stopped 88 percent of those attempts.
Senior back
Maya Turner has anchored the Jaguars' defense, having played a team-high 318 minutes on the back line while
Makenna Collins has played 282 minutes, ranking second on the squad.
QUOTABLE
"I think the freshmen, Smitty and Soph, have come in and they've done their job and they're meshing well with me and (
Makenna Collins)," senior
Maya Turner said. "They're not afraid to go in on tackles, they're strong on the ball and they're not intimidated by anyone."
SCOUTING BELMONT
Belmont is 1-1-1 to start the season and 1-0-1 in two home matches. The Bruins opened the year with a 3-0 shutout of Union (Tenn.) and played Middle Tennessee to a 1-1 draw last weekend. Anna Sweeney has two of the team's four goals and leads the squad with seven shot attempts. In goal, Sarah Doyle has been Belmont's No. 1 keeper with a 1.10 goals against average and 12 saves to her credit. Belmont's defense has only allowed 28 shots and eight corner kicks in the season's first three contests.
SCOUTING USI
USI is 2-1-1 to start the year and 1-0 on its home turf. The Screaming Eagles boast early season victories over both Winona State and Rose-Hulman to start the season. Peyton Murphy leads USI with four of the team's six goals and both Morgan Beyer and Jill DiTusa have two assists each. In goal, Maya Etienne has played all 360 minutes and has a 0.50 goals against average with 10 saves and two shutouts. USI has outshot its four opponents by a 64-28 margin.
INSIDE THE SERIES
IUPUI is 1-0 all-time against Belmont and Monday's game with USI will be the first-ever meeting between the two sides. IUPUI defeated Belmont by a 3-1 score on Sept. 13, 2019 and Lacognato tallied an insurance goal in the game's 67th minute.
UP NEXT
IUPUI will host home matches with Murray State (Sept. 8) and Evansville (Sept. 11) to cap the non-conference schedule. Both matches will be played at the on-campus Michael A. Carroll Stadium and admission will be FREE of charge.
