INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI men's soccer team opened its 2022 campaign with a 2-2 draw with crosstown foe Marian University at the on-campus Michael A. Carroll Stadium on Thursday night (Aug. 25). The Jaguars built a 1-0 lead, but had to rally to pull even in the second half for a 2-2 draw. Juniors
Lukas Hackaa and
Logan Finnegan tallied for the Jaguars while
Medard Mikobi and
Josemir Gomez earned assists.
"I'm happy with the first and last 20 minutes of the game, but not too thrilled with the middle 50 minutes," head coach
Sid van Druenen said. "We got outworked and outsmarted in that period and that can't happen at this level.
"I was happy to see the guys fight back after going 2-1 down and think the tie is a fair result, based on the game. I wasn't always too impressed with our work rate in transition and decision making on the ball."
IUPUI (0-0-1) took a quick lead on Hackaa's first goal in an IUPUI uniform as he tallied in the ninth minute. Mikobi sent a pass out to Hackaa on the right side, only to see his teammate send a composed strike past Marian goalkeeper Brendan Weiger for the game's first goal. The score held through the first half as junior goalkeeper
Lucas Morefield dialed up a scoreless opening 45.
Marian drew even in the 52nd minute when Romaric Berneron got on the business end of a Jack Reynolds cross to redirect a shot past Morefield. Less than six minutes later, Kameron Hooker scored after an IUPUI giveaway deep in its own territory.
Conceding the second goal seemingly awakened the IUPUI attack as the Jaguars put the heat on the Knights from there. IUPUI pulled even in the 67th minute when Finnegan took a through ball from Gomez and broke free for a well angled shot from seven yards out.
Finnegan and Hackaa finished with a game-high four shots apiece as the Jaguars outshot the guests 17-10, but put just four shots on frame. Gomez and freshman
Ethan Vermillion had two shots as well.
Morefield finished with two saves in the draw.
Eleven different IUPUI players made their Jaguar debuts on Thursday, six of whom were starters. The Jaguars will return to action on Sunday when they head south to face Evansville at 5:00 p.m. Central (6 Eastern).
