EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Freshmen
Caleb McComas and
Edgar Correia scored their first collegiate points on Sunday (Aug. 28), but it wasn't enough as host Evansville tallied three first half goals en route to a 3-1 win. McComas netted his first collegiate goal in the game's 53rd minute off an assist from Correia to slice into the Purple Aces' lead, but it wouldn't be enough in the loss.
The Purple Aces took advantage of set pieces in the opening half to take a commanding 3-0 by the break. Carlos Barcia opened the scoring in the 16th minute off an assist from Nkosi Graham before Evansville scored two more on restarts. In the 27th minute, Nacho Diaz headed home a Jose Vivas corner kick to make it 2-0 and Diaz scored again on a free kick after an IUPUI yellow card in the 43rd minute.
Evansville (1-0-1) outshot the Jaguars 8-2 in the opening half with IUPUI getting attempts on target from
Logan Finnegan and
Lukas Hackaa.
IUPUI's first shot attempt of the second half hit paydirt as McComas scored, just moments after UE's Porter Pomykal had a shot denied by the right post. IUPUI continued to press for another score, largely behind the play of Finnegan and
Gavin O'Shea, but was unable to scratch again.
"It was a moment of pride for me and my family," McComas said of his first score. "I'm glad I could score my first goal for my team.
"As a group, we simply just need to commit to the high intensity that Coach van Druenen is emphasizing. This is a team that is learning what it means to be a competitive Division I team."
Finnegan led all players with four shots while Hackaa and McComas had two each. Junior goalkeeper
Lucas Morefield made five saves and faced 16 shots in defeat. Graham paced the UE attack with three shots.
IUPUI will return home on Friday, Sept. 2 to face Eastern Illinois at 7:00 p.m. at Carroll Stadium. The Jaguars will cap the two-game homestand on Sunday, Sept. 4 at 4:00 p.m. Admission will be FREE of charge to both matches.
