CHARLESTON, Ill. - The IUPUI women's soccer team capped its preseason slate on Sunday (Aug. 14), falling on the road at Eastern Illinois by a 2-1 score.
Emma Antoine deposited IUPUI's lone score of the preseason with a tally in the game's 84th minute.
EIU, playing its third exhibition match, scored goals in the 37th and 68th minutes for the win.
"We haven't done much in the attack in training quite yet, but it got better today as the game went on," head coach
Chris Johnson said. "We had trouble finding that last pass in the attacking third, but it'll get there.
"We had a lot of plays where we had them spread out and just didn't play the right ball or didn't execute in the moment. It's going the right direction but it's just not there yet."
Unofficially, IUPUI finished with a 16-12 advantage in shots, but put just six of 16 attempts on target and earned just three corner kicks to EIU's six.
The Panthers went in front late in the first half when Sarah Hagg beat
Ashton Kudlo on a penalty kick to open the scoring. EIU's Jenna Little doubled the lead in the 68th minute when she glanced a shot off the inside of the post and past
Arissa North for a score.
IUPUI finally tallied in the 84th minute when Antoine got on the receiving end of a long North punt and eventually slotted a shot past the EIU keeper for a score.
Johnson noted that a number of players had opportunities, including a
Sophia White cross that rang off a post and a pair of attempts from
Maya Lacognato that flew high of target. In addition, he continued to spread minutes across the roster, including heavy minutes for all four freshman field players.
"The kids who are coming off the bench are raising our level of play," Johnson said. "They're going to push our starters for those minutes."
Kudlo was credited with five saves in the opening 45 minutes while North made two stops after halftime.
The Jaguars will officially begin the 2022 campaign on Thursday (Aug. 18) when they face Tennessee Tech on ESPN+.
