INDIANAPOLIS - The IU Indianapolis women's soccer team yielded three first half goals and were unable to comeback against Wright State on Thursday night (Sept. 24) in a 3-1 defeat. The Jaguars dominated the second half, but only found the back of the net once, doing so in the closing minutes.
Sophomore
Maci Sammons netted her second goal of the season off assists from
Madeline Chappa and
Keilah Muldrow in the game's 78th minute. Muldrow was consistently a threat, finishing with four shot attempts as the Jaguars closed with a 15-14 shot advantage, but put just three on target.
"Oh, we got after them. We said at halftime that we weren't satisfied. We literally gave them three (first half) goals," head coach
Angela Berry White said. "We had a game plan, we knew what they were gonna try to do, and they did it.
"In the second half, we just needed to create opportunities and we had a couple really nice ones, and obviously we put that one away. You have to create the shots; you have to create those moments and that's what we wanted to do in the second half. That was a good plus for us."
WSU (4-5-1, 2-0 HL) went in front in the sixth minute when Olivia Stroud got loose on the doorstep after a ball came in from the right side from Ruby Dunlevy. Stroud was able to angle a shot past IU Indy goalkeeper
Gwen Eiler in front of a raucous IU Indy student contingent for the game's first goal. In the 27th minute, Taliah Pellizzari scored off an assist from Dunlevy to double their lead.
The Raiders added a third goal in the 43rd minute when Makenzie Chinn's shot deflected off an IU Indy goalkeeper and inside the far post for an insurance tally.
The Jaguars (2-6-2, 0-2 HL) were the aggressors after halftime, creating chances with a steady dose of Muldrow and
Caroline Kelley in the attack. It wasn't until Chappa's neat ball into Muldrow in the 78th minute that setup Sammons that the Jaguars were able to break up the shutout.
The Jaguars will continue the homestand on Sunday (Sept. 27) when they host Northern Kentucky at 1:00 p.m. at Carroll Stadium.
