JAGS FALL IN SEASON OPENER THRILLER, 52-50

Transfer Jazmyn Turner led the Jaguar offense scoring 20

INDIANAPOLIS – The IUPUI women's basketball team opened the 2022-23 season with a nail-biting loss to UIC, 52-50. Senior transfer Jazmyn Turner led the Jaguar offense with a career-high 20 points along with a team-high eight boards.

"It was a disappointing outcome, but I was proud of our team for never giving up," said head coach Kate Bruce. "We struggled offensively tonight, but we will learn from it and continue to get better."
 
UIC (1-0) took control in the first quarter, 18-7 but the Jags fought back outscoring the Flames 13-10 in the second quarter. Heading into the fourth and final quarter, IUPUI was down 41-36 but tied it with a jumper from Turner at 46-46 with six minutes left to play. Despite a strong second half from the Jaguars, UIC held off the Jags 10-3 run sealing the win at 52-50.
 
The Flames defense held the Jags to just 35.7 percent (20-for-56) from the floor and 25.0 percent (6-for-24) behind the arc while UIC shot 44.7 percent (21-for-47) from the floor while shooting just 22.2 percent (2-for-9) from behind the three-point line. The Flames outrebounded the Jags 42-27.
 
Natalie Andersen added nine points with three assists while Logan Lewis scored seven. Destiny Perkins collected two 3's for six points with two assists and two steals. Jaci Jones added five points and Rachel Kent scored three.
 
The Jaguars will travel to Louisville on Thursday, Nov. 10 for a 7:00 PM tipoff before returning to Indy to face Butler inside Hinkle Fieldhouse on Sunday, Nov. 13 at 2:00 PM.
