JAGUARS HIT CENTURY MARK IN EXHIBITION WIN OVER BRESCIA

IUPUI cruises to a 101-60 victory over the Bearcats inside the Jungle on Thursday (Oct. 27)

INDIANAPOLIS - The remade IUPUI basketball team coasted to a 101-60 win over Brescia inside the Jungle on Thursday night (Oct. 27) to cap its preseason schedule. Freshman DJ Jackson scored a game-high 16 points off the IUPUI bench to pace five Jaguars in double-digits and fellow freshman Vincent Brady II chimed in with 14 points. Daylan Hamilton tallied 13, Jlynn Counter scored 12 and Jonah Carrasco added 10 points off the bench.

IUPUI shot 63 percent from the floor and connected on 11-of-20 (55 percent) from three-point range in an emphatic offensive performance. The Jaguars delivered 26 assists on 38 field goals with Amhad Jarrard finishing with eight points, seven assists and six rebounds.

"I liked a lot of what I saw tonight," head coach Matt Crenshaw said. "I thought we played with a lot of energy, we were unselfish and guys were looking to make the extra pass. We turned down some good shots in an effort to get some great shots and that turned in to us being able to score 100 points and shoot 63 percent.

"We have a lot of stuff that we have to clean up, but it was good to get a lot of guys some minutes tonight and get some experience under our belts."

"It definitely felt great," Brady II said after the win. "The whole team brought energy and that's what we wanted. The crowd showed up and brought energy, so that was great for us."

The Jaguars wasted little time in blowing the game open, burying Brescia with an arsenal of threes and dunks in the game's early going. Brady and Armon Jarrard connected on early treys and Amhad Jarrard fed Chris Osten for an alley-oop to build a quick 8-2 lead. Brescia crept back within 10-7 before the Jags unloaded an 18-0 run to end any suspense. Jackson and Hamilton scored five each during the burst while Amhad Jarrard electrified the crowd with a two-handed dunk after Counter picked off a pass in front of the IUPUI bench.

IUPUI shot 70 percent from the floor in the opening half and built a 52-27 halftime lead.

Brady sparked a 12-0 second half run with a trey as the Jaguars' advantage ballooned to 73-35 with 13:11 to play. Crenshaw was able to experiment with some different rotations down the stretch before finally subbing out the regulars with just under four minutes remaining. Redshirt freshman Derek Petersen put the Jaguars over 100 with just over a minute to play when he rainbowed in a wing three off an assist from Hamilton. Redshirt freshman Caleb Crane was the lone IUPUI player to not score as he misfired on a turnaround jumper on the game's final possession.

Hamilton finished with a team-high nine boards in just 19 minutes as IUPUI won the glass by a 42-26 margin. The Jags outscored the Bearcats 50-22 in the paint and 19-8 on second chance points. Seven different Jaguars connected from long range as Brady hit 3-of-5 attempts and Jackson was successful on both of his tries. Hamilton hit 2-of-3 from deep and also delivered five assists.

Tayton Smith, Nevin Graves and Tre Pillow led Brescia with eight points apiece.

IUPUI will open the regular season with a two-game trip to Iowa, opening at Iowa State on Monday, Nov. 7. The Jaguars will cap that trip on Wednesday, Nov. 9 at Drake. Both contests will tip-off at 7:00 p.m. CT (8 Eastern).
