COUNTER TALLIES 16 IN SEASON OPENING LOSS AT IOWA STATE

Jaguars drop season opener at Iowa State on Monday night (Nov. 7), 88-39

AMES, Iowa - Sophomore guard Jlynn Counter turned in 16 points and four rebounds in his IUPUI debut at Iowa State on Monday night (Nov. 7) but the Jaguars fell to the host Cyclones, 88-39. Iowa State shot 52 percent from the floor and forced 29 IUPUI turnovers, cashing on the Jaguars' miscues to the tune of 31 points. Jaren Holmes led three Iowa State players with 23 points and Gabe Kalscheur contributed 16 off the bench, including four treys.

IUPUI (0-1), which started three freshmen and five newcomers on Monday, found sledding tough as the hosts clamped down after an even start.

"This is a starting point for us. We're young, so it was good for the new guys to see this speed and strength and athleticism. (Iowa State) did a good job of speeding us up and making us uncomfortable with their pressure. Those turnovers led to them getting out in transition and getting some easy buckets," head coach Matt Crenshaw said. "I thought Jlynn adapted to the speed of the game right away and showed some really good stuff.

"The rest of the guys will learn from this and we'll be better prepared on Wednesday."

Things were all even at 9-9 in the game's early going, largely behind Counter, before the Cyclones ripped off a 19-2 run, including 15 straight points, to build a 19-point lead late in the first half. Junior Daylan Hamilton stopped the bleeding with an open trey from the top of the key before ISU built a 45-22 halftime lead. IUPUI scored the first six points of the second half to gain some momentum, but Iowa State countered with a flurry to bury the Jaguars.

IUPUI attempted 20 fewer shots than the Cyclones due to 29 turnovers and a 41-25 deficit on the glass.

Junior John Egbuta came off the IUPUI bench to score six points in 17 minutes as he and Counter were the only two IUPUI players with multiple field goals. Crenshaw was able to get 15 different players on the court in the opener, 12 of whom were making their IUPUI debuts. Only Carrasco, Boston Stanton III and Marlon Taylor had any previous IUPUI experience. Carrasco finished with two points and three boards, Stanton III closed with three points and Taylor contributed a made free throw in the closing seconds.

IUPUI will cap the two-game trip at Drake on Wednesday night (Nov. 9) at 7:00 p.m. Central (8 Eastern) on ESPN+.
