GREEN BAY, Wisc. - The IUPUI women's soccer team put forth a dominating defensive effort and made an early
Maya Lacognato goal stand as the Jaguars nudged past Green Bay, 1-0, at Aldo Santaga Stadium on Thursday (Oct. 13). The Jaguars limited Green Bay to just nine shots, only two of which were on frame, and recorded their ninth shutout of the season to improve to 7-2-6 overall and 3-2-3 in Horizon League play.
The victory moved the Jaguars into a tie for second-place in the league standings with 12 points.Â
"It was so important for us to get this road win. Everything is really starting to come together and we are doing so well, playing hard for each other," junior
Sam Slimak said.Â
Green Bay's best look of the game came in the 12th minute when Emily Murphy had a shot glance off the top side of the crossbar and out of play. Sophomore
Ashton Kudlo returned from injury to record two stops in her fourth shutout of the season, collecting both before halftime.Â
Offensively, IUPUI got the only production it would need in the game's 21st minute.Â
Junior
Carlie Werner sent Slimak forward up the left side before Slimak centered a shot cross to the six-yard box. Lacognato, the Jaguars' pint sized forward, slipped in behind a Green Bay defender and bodied a shot past Green Bay goalkeeper Payton Lang for her league leading seventh goal of the season.Â
"Maya is such a hard working player who you can always count on. I love playing with her and love her finishing ability," Slimak said. "Also, Ashton really brought the energy returning from her injury and played with such composure, it was great."
Despite finishing with a 12-9 edge on shot attempts and 4-1 margin on corner kicks, the Jaguars' offense didn't muster much against a stingy Green Bay (3-8-2, 1-4-2 HL) unit. Down the stretch, the Jaguars opted to kill the clock, rather than seek to attack. The strategy worked as the Phoenix barely broke past midfield and when they did, IUPUI had plenty of numbers behind the ball. Senior
Maya Turner continued to anchor the defensive effort with a full 90 minute effort and freshman midfielder
Kailyn Smith played 83 minutes in the defensive midfield.Â
Junior
Jessica Jacobs came off the IUPUI bench to fire a game-high four shots, primarily from long distance, and freshman
Emma Frey had two attempts.Â
The Jaguars will return home on Sunday (Oct. 16) to host Robert Morris on Senior Day at Michael A. Carroll Stadium. IUPUI will honor its five seniors immediately following the game, slated for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff on ESPN+.Â
