INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI basketball team's offensive woes continued at home on Thursday night (Jan. 20) as the Jaguars were dumped by Wright State inside Indiana Farmers Coliseum, 73-45. IUPUI was held to just 37 percent shooting while Wright State hit 51 percent overall and 39 percent from three-point range. Grant Basile scored 17 of his game-high 20 points in the opening half and C.J. Wilbourn added 11 points in 13 minutes off the bench for the Raiders.
Sophomore
Bakari LaStrap scored in double-digits for the fifth time in the Jaguars' last seven games, tallying a team-high 10 points and six boards off the bench.
Jonah Carrasco had eight points and four boards and
B.J. Maxwell added seven points and five rebounds in the loss.
"They're a good team and their big guys really did a number on us tonight," head coach
Matt Crenshaw said. "We just can't afford those long dry spells where we don't get good shots or turn the ball over. We had good energy early, but that long stretch in the first half where we didn't get good looks or turned the ball over and allowed them to get out in transition really hurt us.
"Good teams take advantage and that's what they did."
IUPUI (1-16, 0-7 HL) pulled even at 17 all at the 8:35 mark of the first half when Carrasco scored in close after a steal from
Azariah Seay. However, from there, IUPUI's offense went flat out silent and Wright State (10-8, 7-2 HL) outscored the hosts by a 22-1 margin over nearly six minutes. WSU went 8-of-10 from the floor, including a pair of Basile threes, while the Jags went 0-of-4 and committed five turnovers during the stretch.
Wright State ultimately went into the half with a 39-20 lead as Basile hit 6-of-8 shots in the opening half to pace the guests.
IUPUI never countered in the second half as the Raiders opened with a 10-2 run to bury the hosts.
LaStrap hit 4-of-6 shots for his 10-point effort and Carrasco finished with eight points in 25 minutes. Maxwell closed with seven points and two assists and
Chuks Isitua hit both of his field goal attempts and had five points off the bench.
The win gave Wright State a regular season series sweep of the Jaguars.
IUPUI will continue the three-game homestand on Saturday (Jan. 22) when the Jaguars host Northern Kentucky at noon inside Indiana Farmers Coliseum. That game will be broadcast on ESPN+ as Greg Rakestraw (pxp) and IUPUI Hall of Famer Bob Lovell (analyst) will call the action from courtside.
