INDIANAPOLIS - Coming off clean sweeps of their competition in the season opening Butler Duals last weekend, the IUPUI men's and women's swimming and diving squads will open their home slate this week with duals against UIndy (Friday, Oct. 1) and Lewis University (Saturday, Oct. 2) inside the IUPUI Natatorium. Friday's meet will begin at 3:00 p.m. and Saturday's meet will start at 1:00 p.m. Both meets will be free of charge although patrons in attendance will be required to wear masks throughout.
Head coach
Damion Dennis' teams were brilliant in their opener as the men swept Xavier (140-96), Valparaiso (196-40) and Saint Louis (176-64) and the women's team went 4-0 with wins over Saint Louis (137-102), Valpo (177-44), Butler (160-70) and Xavier (118-111).
The men's 200 IM set the tone, posting a facility record with a time of 1:33.02 to cruise past Xavier's relay by more than two seconds. The group of
Ben Kimmel,
Logan Kelly,
Spencer Jyawook and
Kevin Burke would all go on to excel in individual events with each earning an individual win.
Senior
Emma Theobald posted a pair of event wins, capturing both the 400 IM and 200 backstroke last Sunday, winning the 400 IM by nine seconds and 200 back by more than two seconds. Freshman
Emmaleigh Zietlow won the 1000 free to start her day and followed with second-place finishes in both the 400 IM and 500 free. Fellow freshman
Lillian Brandt also had an impressive collegiate debut, winning the 100 free with a time of 53.23 and placing second in the 200 free. Transfer
Ali Sippel claimed a win in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:24.54, outpacing the runner-up by almost three seconds.
The Jaguars also swept the diving events as
Isabella Smith won the 1-meter event with a score of 217.85, followed by
Sadie Smith at 211.80. In the 3-meter event, Sadie got the win with a score of 236.90 and Isabelle was second at 182.65.
All total, the women's squad posted seven event wins and 12 top-3 finishes.
On the men's side, Jyawook swam to a win in the 50 free and Kimmel won the 200 backstroke by well more than two seconds. Kelly won the 200 breaststroke by a wide margin and Burke won the 100 free in a time of 47.32.
Nicolas Gallego paced the distance group with an early win in the 1000 free, finishing just ahead of
Luke Dibley. The men's team also swept the boards as
Alex Scott on the 1-meter at 282.70 and
Adam Schmehl was second at 281.30. Schmehl won the 3-meter with a score of 281.00 and Scott was second at 264.05.
