CLEVELAND, Ohio - Despite getting the game's initial goal early in the first half, the IUPUI men's soccer team was hit with a barrage of goals by Cleveland State as the Vikings rushed to a 3-1 home win over the Jaguars on Wednesday night (Sept. 29). Junior midfielder
Chris Workman staked IUPUI to a 1-0 lead in the game's 49th minute, only to see Cleveland State fire back with three unanswered tallies in a 13-minute span to remain undefeated in Horizon League play.
Head coach
Brian Barnett altered his starting lineup with hopes that it would jumpstart an otherwise pedestrian offensive unit. The immediate returns showed that IUPUI (2-5-1, 1-3 HL) was more engaged offensively as the Jaguars ultimately outshot Cleveland State 7-5 in a scoreless first half. The Jags had an early attempt by
Corey Goede knocked down and
Carson Shrader pushed the rebound attempt wide of target.
IUPUI finally broke through in the 49th minute when Workman tallied off a
Tylin Broaders assist for his first tally of the season and second of his collegiate career. Life was good for just more than four minutes until Cleveland State (5-3, 4-0 HL) got the equalizer off the foot of Ryan Kolonick in the 54th minute.
Jannis Schmidt put home the game-winner on a long strike in the 63rd minute and Bojan Kolevski added insurance in the 67th minute to make it 3-1.
IUPUI fired at will against Cleveland State from there, but CSU goalkeeper Omeed Naeemy made four saves down the stretch to keep the Jags from chipping away.
Owen Jarrell tried the CSU keeper before
Mandela Cybahiro hit an attempt right at the CSU netminder in the 70th minute. Later, both
Tommy Patacca and
Gianni Catenacci put shots on frame to no avail.
IUPUI was outshot 15-7 after halftime and 20-14 for the game. Patacca led IUPUI with three shot attempts and
Logan Finnegan had two attempts.
IUPUI will return home to host Milwaukee on Saturday (Oct. 2) at the on-campus Michael A. Carroll Stadium at 1:00 p.m.
