INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI men's soccer team will step out of conference play on Tuesday night (Sept. 21) when the Jaguars host Bellarmine (3-2-1) at the on-campus Michael A. Carroll Stadium at 7:00 p.m.. The contest will be aired on ESPN+ as Greg Rakestraw (pxp) will describe the action. Tickets will be on sale at the box office on the night of the game or in advance by contacting the IUPUI Ticket Office.
On the pitch, IUPUI (2-2-1) is coming off a tough 1-0 road loss at UIC as the Jaguars yielded a penalty kick in the game's 61st minute for the game's only score. Otherwise, IUPUI played tit for tat against one of the league's top attacking teams as
Lucas Morefield made four saves and the Flames were held to just five shots on goal. Offensively,
Tommy Patacca had five shot attempts for the Jaguars while
Chris Workman had three attempts from his midfield spot.
For the season, IUPUI is tops in the Horizon League defensively, allowing just 0.80 goals per game and having three clean sheets in five games. Morefield is second in the league with a 0.88 goals against average and has two shutouts in his four starts. He's also second in the league with an .818 save percentage.
Offensively, goals have come from
Rayan Choukri,
Logan Finnegan and
Cameron Haegele this season.
Tylin Broaders and
Kirezi Freddy have the team's two assists. Workman has a team-high eight shot attempts on the year. The team's calling card has been its defensive core, keyed by Patacca,
Corey Goede,
Gianni Catenacci and
Ethan Diedel.
QUOTABLE
"This result is going to be a tough pill to swallow. I felt like our team defended one of the most prolific attacks in the league quite well and we did a good job to earn possession and get forward to generate some chances for ourselves. Frankly, we didn't execute well enough in those moments to create a ton of truly dangerous chances. Credit to UIC for getting the goal and defending restarts well to close out the game," Barnett said following Saturday night's 1-0 loss at UIC.
