INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI women's soccer team finished on the wrong side of a 1-0 decision at Butler on Thursday night (Sept. 2), but got an incredible showing from senior goalkeeper
AP Woodall, who finished with 19 saves. Woodall's 19 stops were the second-most in a single-game in program history and helped keep the Jaguars alive, despite a 32-5 shot avalanche.
"(AP) was fantastic," head coach
Chris Johnson said. "In the first half, there was a stretch where they had three shots inside the penalty spot and she played them all out. Overall, she was just fantastic the entire night."
Butler (3-1) was all over the IUPUI defense throughout the evening, outshooting the Jaguars by a 17-4 margin before the break. However, they only solved Woodall on one occasion when Abigail Isger angled a shot past the IUPUI keeper in the game's 22nd minute. Alli Leonard setup the play from the right-hand side before sending a pass into her teammate.
Otherwise, Woodall was a brick wall and the offense nearly found a crease to draw even.
IUPUI (1-3) just missed an equalizer in the 23rd minute when
Elizabeth Bueckers had a shot clang off the crossbar in the 23rd minute off service from
Maya Lacognato. Butler keeper Emma Martin got a piece of the attempt to redirect it off the underside of the crossbar for one of her two saves on the night.
Bueckers tested Martin again in the 31st minute when she fired from the right side in traffic.
Alex Ludolph just missed tying the game in the closing minute of the half as well as her header off a
Leah Shumate corner went just over the bar.
While Butler outshot the Jags 15-1 after the break, it wasn't nearly as threatening as the first half as the majority of attempts came from outside the penalty area. Woodall made 10 saves in each half as Leonard had a game-high seven shots, putting five on frame. While Woodall did the heavy lifting, she also benefited from goal line clearances from both Bueckers and
Maya Turner in the first half, helping stave off the Bulldog attack.
IUPUI's lone shot attempt of the second half came in the closing minutes as they committed more numbers to the attack in an effort to draw even.
Maya Turner had an attempt from the right side knocked down by a Butler defender and the game ended just as Turner had a cross go into the Butler 18 and hit off
Emma Antoine, just before the final horn.
"In the first half, we were giving up some things in behind and in the second half, we made a few adjustments and it was better," Johnson said. "The big thing was the growth of this group. We have such a young group of players out there on the field and from the game on Sunday, where we gave up a lot of things in behind, to tonight where we didn't give up much in behind at all, that's the growth we're looking for."
The Jaguars will cap the two-game week at Dayton on Sunday, Sept. 5 at 1:00 p.m. on ESPN+.
