BUECKERS, WOODALL FUEL ROAD RESULT AT DAYTON

Jaguars play Dayton (3-1-2) to a 1-1 draw on Sunday (Sept. 5)

DAYTON, Ohio - IUPUI senior Elizabeth Bueckers tallied her fifth goal of the year and classmate AP Woodall continued her torrid play in goal as the Jaguars played a strong Dayton team to a double overtime draw on the road on Sunday (Sept. 5).

"It was another fantastic game in net for AP. She has been really good the past couple of games and kept us in the match when we were still trying to find ourselves," head coach Chris Johnson said. "Liz had a nice defensive pick and converted it for a goal that gave us a lead that we need to learn how to hold onto.

"I thought this was a step in the right direction but we aren't quite where we need to be yet. We have two more non-conference games where we need to continue moving in a positive direction so we can start winning some games."

IUPUI (1-3-1) did more defending than attacking for the bulk of the first half, but Bueckers came up with an opportunistic play to start the game's scoring. Bueckers forced a turnover by pressuring a Dayton defender, then took possession just inside the penalty box. From there, she struck a right-footed shot just inside the post in the game's 32nd minute. It marked her fifth goal in the season's first five games and the 17th of her collegiate career. It was a welcome sight for an IUPUI attack that had been blanked in each of its past two outings.

The Jags maintained the lead until the 53rd minute when Dayton's Noel Blain slotted a shot past Woodall. Diana Benigno sent a pass into her teammate, who was able to redirect a shot just past Woodall from point blank range.

It was the lone blemish on Woodall's day as she finished with 13 saves and faced a 31-shot onslaught. On the flip side, IUPUI attempted 16 shots and had some good opportunities late in the contest.

Late in regulation, Autumn Weeks played Carlie Werner in behind the Dayton defense, but Werner's shot was knocked away for a corner kick. On the ensuing corner, Bueckers had a clean look, but had her shot stopped by Dayton goalkeeper Maddie Crosbie.

In the 105th minute, Crosbie made a remarkable sprawling save of Weeks' blast from the top of the 18, pushing the shot just over the bar. Two Dayton keepers combined to make six saves with Crosbie making five after halftime.

Woodall, coming off a 19-save effort on Butler this week, was similarly brilliant on Sunday, largely keeping Dayton at bay. UD's Marlee Taylor tried her with 11 total shots and put five on frame, to no avail.

"I think we played until the last minute. We have kept moving in the right direction. I'm excited to see what is going to happen during conference play," Woodall said. "I think we are getting more comfortable with each other, on and off the pitch."

Weeks, Maya Lacognato and Leah Shumate paced the IUPUI attack with three shots apiece and Bueckers had two attempts, both on frame. In the defensive third, both Alex Stocker (109) and Grace Moore (103) played virtually the entire match in front of Woodall.

IUPUI will return home at host Central Michigan on Thursday night (Sept. 9) at 6:00 p.m. at the on-campus Michael A. Carroll Stadium.
