JAGUARS FOILED BY SECOND HALF PK IN 1-0 LOSS AT UIC

IUPUI (2-2-1, 1-1 HL) yield the game-winner in the game's 61st minute

CHICAGO - The IUPUI men's soccer team allowed a second half penalty kick that proved to be the difference as the Jaguars fell on the road at UIC on Saturday (Sept. 18), 1-0.

IUPUI (2-2-1, 1-1 HL) was called for pulling Josh Torres down in the penalty area in the game's 61st minute, resulting in a PK opportunity. On the ensuing chance, Younes Dayekh drove a shot off the inside of the post and past Lucas Morefield for the game's only goal.

"This result is going to be a tough pill to swallow. I felt like our team defended one of the most prolific attacks in the league quite well and we did a good job to earn possession and get forward to generate some chances for ourselves," head coach Brian Barnett said. "Frankly, we didn't execute well enough in those moments to create a ton of truly dangerous chances.

"Credit to UIC for getting the goal and defending restarts well to close out the game."

IUPUI was heavy in the attack, particularly late in the first half and throughout the second half. In the 41st minute, Tommy Patacca blasted a free kick through the UIC defensive wall, but had it deflected away by UIC keeper Andres Vasquez. That was shortly after Rayan Choukri had put a shot on frame in the run of play moments earlier.

In the second half, IUPUI came out on the attack, getting two early attempts from Patacca and an attempt from Carson Shrader that was blocked for a corner kick.

UIC closed with an 18-14 differential on shot attempts and 5-4 edge on corner kicks, although all five Flames' corners came in the first half. Patacca attempted a team-high five shots for the Jaguars and Chris Workman had three attempts. Dayekh paced the UIC attack with five shot attempts, including the winner.

Morefield continued his strong play in goal, registering four saves in his fourth start of the season.

IUPUI will return home and will step out of conference to host Bellarmine on Tuesday night (Sept. 21) at 7:00 p.m. at Carroll Stadium. That contest will be broadcast on ESPN+ as Greg Rakestraw (pxp) calls the action. In addition, tickets will be available at the Carroll Stadium box office or by contacting the IUPUI ticket office in advance of game day.
