JAGUARS DROP NON-CONFERENCE AFFAIR TO BELLARMINE, 1-0

Visiting Knights tally the game's only goal in the 75th minute

INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI men's soccer team dropped a soggy affair to Bellarmine on Tuesday night (Sept. 21) at Michael A. Carroll Stadium, 1-0. The Jaguars' defense limited Bellarmine to just two shots on goal, but the decisive attempt came in the 75th minute when Haziq Zed angled a shot past Lucas Morefield for the evening's only offense.

Nolan McGrath centered a pass from the left side to Zed, who was given a free run in the middle channel of the field. Zed settled the pass and directed a shot past a diving Morefield for his first score of the year.

"Credit to Bellarmine on excellent execution of their game plan and identity," head coach Brian Barnett said. "The challenge to our team tonight was to get on the ball and not only generate attack, but be dangerous and we didn't accomplish that enough in our final third play or on restarts."

After an uneventful first half saw the IUPUI (2-3-1) attack muster just five shots in the opening 45 minutes, Barnett gave second half starts to six new faces in Tylin Broaders, Rayan Choukri, Mandela CybahiroKirezi Freddy Tyler Gainer and Owen Jarrell

The clearly energized group had looks offensively throughout the second half as Choukri pulled a shot just clear of the near post in the 57th minute and the fired wide right in the 64th minute. Riley Shives had the cleanest look of the night, putting a header on frame from in close in the 70th minute, forcing Bellarmine goalkeeper Matthew Brozovich to punch the attempt over the bar.

Even after Bellarmine scored on the counter in the 75th minute, IUPUI continued to create chances down the stretch. Choukri hit a shot from outside the penalty area right at Brozovich in the 82nd minute and in the closing seconds, Jarrell just missed getting on the business end of service as the final seconds were being count down.

IUPUI was outshot 14-11, but five of its 11 attempts on target. Choukri led the IUPUI attack with four shot attempts off the Jaguars bench.

Morefield managed just one save in the loss as Juan Ballas had a team-high three shots for the victors. It marked IUPUI's fourth straight 1-0 decision with the Jaguars having won two and lost the most recent two.

IUPUI will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 25 when the Jaguars host Detroit Mercy in Horizon League play at Carroll Stadium at 1:00 p.m.. The Jaguars will honor its senior class throughout the day and that contest will be aired on ESPN+.
