EAST LANSING, Mich. - The IUPUI volleyball team will be back in action this week when the Jaguars participate in the Green & White Volleyball Classic, hosted by Michigan State this weekend. IUPUI will compete in two matches in the four-team tournament, playing both host MSU and Central Michigan on Saturday (Sept. 18). IUPUI's opener against the Spartans will be at 11:00 a.m., followed by the contest with CMU at 2:30 p.m.. Both matches are slated to be broadcast on BTN+.
IUPUI (2-7) looks to stop a four-game slide after dropping all three contests at Indiana State last weekend. Head coach Lindsey Froehlich's team showed flashes during the three games but ultimately dropped contests to Indiana State, Austin Peay and Western Michigan. The Jags had chances against Austin Peay, but dropped a tight second set and lost momentum in ultimately falling 3-1.
Sophomore middle
Emily Alan earned a spot on the Sycamore Invite All-Tournament Team and was her second all-tournament team award during the non-conference season. Sophomore
Millai Madison (24.0 blocks) and Alan headline the IUPUI defense while fifth-year senior
Rhiannon Schuenemann is tops among the back row players with 164 total digs and 4.69 digs/set. True freshman
Briana Brown leads the offense with 105 kills and 3.00 kills/set. Maddie Haines has put down 73 kills and
Allie Pogue is just off her pace at 70 kills.
Sophomore
Brooke Phillips has been the primary setter with 9.05 assists/set and
Darragh Dixon checks in at 8.00 assists/set.
IUPUI enters the week 0-3 all-time against Michigan State and 4-3 against CMU.
QUOTABLE
"We executed well behind the service line to give us some important point runs. We were able to score with our middles in transition more often today, which was something we worked on this week," Froehlich said following the loss at Indiana State.
SCOUTING MICHIGAN STATE
Michigan State is 4-2 at this point in the season with wins over Western Michigan, Canisius, Dixie State and Weber State. Sarah Franklin leads the Michigan State offense with 3.18 kills/set and hits .246 overall. Cecilee Max-Brown has a team-high 62 kills and has knocked down 3.10 kills/set. Celia Cullen has a team-high 130 assists and the defense is keyed by Talia Edmonds' 4.15 digs/set. 6-foot-3 senior middle Naya Gros has a team-high 31.0 blocks, including seven solo blocks on the year.
SCOUTING CENTRAL MICHIGAN
Central Michigan enters the weekend at 5-4 overall with victories over Bradley, North Dakota, Butler, Youngstown State and Illinois State. The Chippewas swept their own Chippewa Invite with wins over UND, Butler and YSU. Savannah Thompson paces the CMU offense with 3.68 kills/set and a team-high 114 kills. Grace Butler has 185 assists and Kamryn Olson has 123 as the duo combines on 11.83 assists/set. The duo of Aly Gurtiza (5.45 digs/set) and Thompson (4.29 digs/set) key the defense and Maddie Whitfield has a team-high 24.0 total blocks.
