JAGUARS SWEPT BY WESTERN MICHIGAN TO CLOSE SYCAMORE INVITE

Sophomore middle Emily Alan earns a spot on the All-Tournament Team

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The IUPUI volleyball team wrapped up its three-game trip to Terre Haute on Saturday (Sept. 11), falling to Western Michigan by a 3-0 score at the Sycamore Invitational. Sophomore middle Emily Alan earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team for her play over the three days.

The Broncos dispatched of the Jaguars in straight sets, 25-19, 25-12 and 25-14. Briana Brown had a team-high six kills and Rhiannon Schuenemann collected 12 digs, but the Jaguars offense struggled against a stingy Western Michigan defense. Abi Wilcoxson had nine kills for the Broncos and Meredith Phillips added six kills without an attacking error. Madison Merz also had six kills for WMU and hit .556 for the match.

Western surged out to a 9-2 advantage in the first set and never looked back as IUPUI never took the lead. Corrissa Remter made it 13-11 with a kill but an IUPUI service error put momentum back on the side of the Broncos. With Alli Cook on the service line, IUPUI got back to 20-19 with four straight points, which included a Millai Madison kill. However, the Broncos got a critical sideout to ignite a run of five straight points to end the set.

Things began well for IUPUI in set two as Allie Pogue had an early kill, but after a service error later made it 8-6 Broncos, WMU ripped off seven straight points to seize control. Another Madison kill stopped the run, but Western Michigan ran away en route to the 25-12 victory.

Much like the first two sets, IUPUI never found solid footing in the third despite an early kill from Alan in the middle. Even after IUPUI nudged closer, back-to-back service aces from WMU's Mairead Boyle prompted head coach Lindsey Froehlich to call timeout. The Jags never got rolling offensively in falling 25-14.

Sidney Veatch handled setting duties with 14 assists and Cook provided a pair of service aces.

Alan earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team after closing the tournament with 19 kills in three matches and hitting .224 for the event. She also contributed nine blocks, including five against Indiana State in the opener. The entire All-Tournament Team is listed below.

IUPUI will return to action next Saturday, Sept. 18 when it participates in the Green & White Classic, hosted by Michigan State. The Jaguars will face the host Spartans at 11:00 a.m. and then play Central Michigan at 2:30 p.m..
