INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI men's soccer team will open Horizon League play on Saturday afternoon (Sept. 11) when the Jaguars host Wright State at 1:00 p.m. at Michael A. Carroll Stadium. IUPUI (1-1-1) comes in with some positive momentum, stemming from a recent 1-0 road win at Western Illinois last weekend. Goalkeeper
Lucas Morefield delivered his first collegiate shutout in that contest and sophomore midfielder
Logan Finnegan provided the game's only offense and was later named Horizon League Offensive Player of the Week.
FInnegan drew a foul to earn a penalty kick in the game's 78th minute and then converted the opportunity for his first career score. At the other end, Morefield recorded three saves and lowered his goals against average to 1.17 on the season. The win snapped some long streaks for IUPUI as it was the first road win since September 2019 and first non-conference road win since August 2015.
Collectively, IUPUI has blanked two of its three opponents this season and allowed just three goals in three games. The core of
Tommy Patacca,
Corey Goede and
Gianni Catenacci have keyed the defensive group as Patacca has yet to come off the field and Goede has sat just seven minutes total. Catanacci is third on the squad, having played 266 of the team's 290 minutes.
Offensively, Finnegan and
Cameron Haegele each have a goal this season and
Chris Workman and
Rayan Choukri are tops on the team in shot attempts and shots on goal.
QUOTABLE
"The win is amazing, especially because it's some of the guys' first ever collegiate win. We all came together and gave it everything we had. I'm so grateful to have the teammates that I have and wouldn't trade them for anyone else," Finnegan said after the winner at WIU.
PRESEASON POLLS
IUPUI was picked to finish 11th in the Horizon League according to the preseason poll released on Tuesday (Aug. 24):
