MACOMB, Ill. - The IUPUI men's soccer team will continue a three-game road stretch to open the season when the Jaguars take on former league foe Western Illinois on Friday (Sept. 3) at 6:00 p.m. Eastern. The Jags have opened with a strong non-league schedule, having played Bowling Green to a 0-0 draw to open the season before falling on the road at Xavier by a 3-1 score.
Fifth-year senior
Cameron Haegele notched his first career goal, an equalizer, in the loss at Xavier. IUPUI drew even on Haegele's strike just more than a minute after allowing the day's first goal. Redshirt sophomore
Lucas Morefield took the loss in goal, making one save in the defeat. IUPUI outshot Xavier by a 5-4 count in the second half and threatened frequently, including a rocket of a free kick from
Logan Finnegan that had to be punched over the crossbar.
Tylin Broaders,
Kirezi Freddy,
Mandela Cybahiro and
Rayan Choukri came off the IUPUI bench to provide an attacking presence to combine with Finnegan,
Luke Liljegren and
Chris Workman.
IUPUI and Western Illinois were league foes for more than 20 years before the Jaguars moved to the Horizon League. Friday's match will mark the 25th meeting between the two schools.
QUOTABLE
"I couldn't be more proud of our guys in that second half. It's disappointing to lose but I'm very proud of their effort and ethic to kind of put Xavier back on its heels. Our defensive work rate and pressure put Xavier on their heels in the second half and helped us create some (scoring) opportunities," Barnett said.
PRESEASON POLLS
IUPUI was picked to finish 11th in the Horizon League according to the preseason poll released on Tuesday (Aug. 24):
