JAGUARS STUMBLE ON THE ROAD AT WESTERN MICHIGAN, 4-0

IUPUI (1-2) allows a pair of goals in each half of non-conference loss

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - Despite decisive advantages in both shot attempts and corner kicks, the IUPUI women's soccer team was unable to scratch as the Jaguars dropped a non-conference road tilt on Sunday (Aug. 29) at Western Michigan, 4-0. The host Broncos scored a pair of goals in each half, including a pair of second half penalty kicks, to race past the Jags.

IUPUI (1-2) closed with a 14-9 advantage in shot attempts and 6-3 margin in corner kicks, but was blanked, in large part by Maggie Rogers' strong play in net for the hosts.

"I thought we had some really good periods in the second half where we controlled the game and created quality opportunities," head coach Chris Johnson said. "However, our defending as an entire team has to improve so we aren't giving up some of the goals we have been giving up in our games so far."

WMU (2-2) built a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute when Cas Flanagan angled a shot past AP Woodall, just inside the far post. IUPUI looked to draw even in the 23rd minute when it appeared as though Autumn Weeks headed home a Leah Shumate corner kick, past Rogers. However, Weeks was whistled for a foul on the play, disallowing the score.

Renae Blevins tested Rogers with a blast from the top of the 18 in the 28th minute but the WMU netminder redirected the shot wide of frame. Things went from bad to worse for IUPUI in the 34th minute when Bailey Korhorn scored off long service from Jorden Campbell. Campbell arced a long pass between IUPUI's center backs, hitting Korhorn in stride and the Bronco forward beat Woodall with a shot inside the left post on the breakaway.

Down two goals, IUPUI was forced to chase the game from there and did well to dominate possession and field position from the start of the second half. Junior Maya Lacognato engineered much of the IUPUI attack from the right side while Weeks made her presence known in the midfield.

However, WMU took advantage of a rare second half attack opportunity and turned it into a foul inside the penalty area in the 66th minute. Mary Dziuba converted the PK to put the Jags in a three-goal hole. The deficit became nearly insurmountable in the 79th minute when the Broncos were awarded a second penalty kick, this time after an IUPUI defender muscled an attacker to the ground as she was going to goal. Korhorn converted the chance to cap her multi-goal game.

Blevins, Weeks and Elizabeth Bueckers led IUPUI with three shots each and Lacognato attempted two. The already thin IUPUI attack went even more short-handed for much of the second half as Bueckers was sidelined with an injury before returning late. Sophomore Carlie Werner was awarded a start in the attacking third and Abbie Schad made her first start of the season in the IUPUI midfield.

Woodall closed with two saves while Rogers made six stops in a clean sheet for the victors.

IUPUI will return to action on Thursday, Sept. 2 when they face crosstown foe Butler at the Sellick Bowl on the Butler campus at 7:00 p.m..
