BROWN SHINES, POGUE NOTCHES CAREER-HIGH IN DAY TWO OF EIU INVITE

IUPUI picked up its first win of the season beating Bellarmine

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CHARLESTON, Ill. – A stellar day from freshman Briana Brown and a career-high from Allie Pogue helped the Jags earn a split on the second day of the Eastern Illinois Invite on Saturday (Aug. 28).

Behind a career-high 16 kills from Brown, IUPUI (1-2) closed out the tournament with a win over Bellarmine (0-3). Both Pogue and Maddie Haines finished with double-digit kills, tallying 10. Brown picked up a double-double adding 11 kills against the Knights.

A 7-0 run by Bellarmine broke up the first set as IUPUI lost set one 25-20. The Jags pulled back within three at 23-20 but two errors from IUPUI ended the set.

Five-straight points early in the set put IUPUI up 8-5 and the Jags maintained the lead, pushing it to 20-15 after a service ace from Darragh Dixon. A 3-0 run by the Knights made the score 23-20 in favor of IUPUI but the Jags ended the run with a kill by Maddie Haines to win the set 25-20.

IUPUI fell behind early in set three but made a run that included back-to-back blocks by Millai Madison and Haines, followed by a kill by Brown to go ahead 12-10. Up one, IUPUI got two more kills from Brown and a block by Brown and Madison to go up 20-16. Brown then closed out the set with an ace to put the Jags one set away from victory.

In the last set, IUPUI was on fire, hitting .500, committing just two error and tallying 17 kills. Down two early, the Jags got three kills from Pogue to jump ahead. In a back and forth set, IUPUI was up 20-18 but after two errors from Bellarmine, the Jags got two kills to earn match point. A kill by Pogue finished off Bellarmine.

Rhiannon Schuenemann led the Jaguar defense with 24 digs and Addie Evans contributed 13. Dixon guided the offense with 42 assists.

In the first game of the day, IUPUI lost a five-set thriller to Chicago State. Pogue finished with a career-high 22 kills, Brown added 15 and Haines finished the game with 13. Brown picked up her first-career double-double with 10 digs. Schuenemann led IUPUI with 20 digs and Dixon had a double-double with 48 assist and 12 digs.

IUPUI cruised to a 25-15 first set win, hitting .577 as a team in the set, but the offense dropped in the second and third set, hitting .143 and .042, respectively as IUPUI lost the next two sets.

The Jags were down 19-15 in set four but back-to-back kills from Brown pulled the Jags within two. After an error by the Cougars, Brown added another kill to tie the set at 19. Atlantis Clendenin then served two aces putting the Jags on top.

Up by two, IUPUI got a block from Brown and Madison to go up 23-20. The Jags closed out the set with Brown and Haines collecting kills to force a fifth set.

IUPUI started the fifth with a 4-0 run but was matched by a 5-0 run from Chicago State. The Jags found themselves up 12-9 after a kill by Brown but four-straight points from the Cougars put Chicago State back on top. With the set tied at 14, Chicago State got a kill and an error by the Jags ended the match.

UP NEXT
IUPUI will be back home next weekend to host the Hampton Inn Invitational. The tournament will be on Friday (Sept. 3) and Saturday (September 4) and feature matches against Chattanooga, Toledo and Western Illinois.
