INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI women's soccer team got goals from four different scorers and dialed up a defensive shutout as the Jaguars rolled past Marian University, 4-0, at Michael A. Carroll Stadium on Monday (Aug. 23). Junior
Maya Lacognato deposited the game-winner in the 16th minute and senior
Elizabeth Bueckers and sophomore
Sam Slimak both had a goal and an assist apiece. Junior
Ciena Miller also netted her first career score in the closing minutes of the first half of the victory.
IUPUI (1-1) closed with a 25-8 shot advantage and 6-1 margin in corner kicks in earning the decisive victory.
"I liked the energy the entire night," head coach
Chris Johnson said. "The kids off the bench, the people who started the game - it was good energy the entire time. I think we had a little bit of nerves in the beginning and weren't quite connecting like we needed to, but as we got kind of settled in to what we wanted to do, I thought we really kind of connected passes out there and created some opportunities.
"Overall, I'm very pleased with what I saw tonight. Getting a shutout is great too."
Lacognato opened the game's scoring by pinging a shot off the inside of the post off a nifty pass from Slimak for her first goal of the year. Bueckers ignited the play by sending Slimak forward with a lead pass for her first assist of the campaign.
"I'm so happy for (Maya)," Johnson said. "It's been a little while since she scored and that's not because of a lack of effort. She also created four set pieces around the 18 in both halves of the game. She's a kid that continues to carry a target on her back, so for her to get open and kind of sneak through and put a ball away - I'm very happy for her."
In the 34th minute,
Emma Antoine single-handedly created a scoring chance when she intercepted a pass near midfield and raced on goal before being tripped up inside the penalty area by Marian goalkeeper Alexis Patenaude. IUPUI was awarded a penalty kick and Bueckers rocketed home the attempt for her fourth goal in the season's first two games.
Miller capped the scoring just before halftime by taking advantage of a poor clearance by the Knights' defense.
Jessica Jacobs got tangled with a Marian defender just inside the 18-yard box, leading to a loose ball along the right side. Miller was in the right place at the right time and cleaned up the mess before ripping a shot off the keeper and inside the near post for her first career score.
The Jags added insurance just after halftime when Slimak drove home a right-footed shot from the top of the six-yard box off assists from
Leah Shumate and
Maya Turner. Shumate sent in a well placed cross and Turner redirected a pass to Slimak, who was stationed at the top of the six and powered home her first collegiate score.
Defensively,
AP Woodall kept the sheet clean in the first half before giving way to classmate
Emily McGrath at the start of the second half. Both needed just one save to combine on the shutout. At the other end, Patenaude made six saves in the full 90 minutes of action. Lacognato led the IUPUI attack with four shot attempts while
Carlie Werner had three shots on goal off the IUPUI bench.
Erin Oleksak had a team-high three attempts for Marian and she and Izzy Stanfield accounted for the Knights two shots on goal.
Johnson used the game as an opportunity to give extended minutes to many of the reserves as
Alex Stocker played a team-high 84 minutes and
Hannah Roberson played 70 in the defensive third.
Abbie Schad played a team-high 63 minutes off the bench in the Jaguars' midfield.
IUPUI will return to action on Sunday (Aug. 29) when it faces Western Michigan at 1:00 p.m. in Kalamazoo.
