GREEN BAY, Wis. – IUPUI went to extras in both games against Green Bay and the Jags were able to come out with a victory in the second game of the doubleheader to close out the season with a victory.
Green Bay 4 – IUPUI 3 F/8
The Jaguars had a chance in the eighth but was not able to get a run across before letting Green Bay score the winning run in the bottom of the inning.
IUPUI finished the game with nine hits but left 12 runners on base, unable to capitalize on scoring chances throughout the game.
Jaida Speth finished the game with a 4-for-4 day, her first four-hit game of her career.
Amber Pagan also finished with multiple hits, going 2-for-3 with an RBI.
The Jags got on the board in the top of the first with a two-out rally as
Jennah Speth walked.
Jordan Barnes singled to right, moving Speth to third and Pagan delivered with a single to bring home Speth and put the Jags up 1-0.
Green Bay responded with a two-out rally of its own in the bottom of the inning, scoring two runs on a bases-loaded double.
Singles by
Maicey Bedrick and Speth, plus a passed ball put runners on second and third with one out.
Morgan Gilbert tied up the game with a groundout to score Bedrick. The Jags then took the lead in the next inning after back-to-back walks by Barnes and Pagan and a single by
Rachael Gregory.
After two runs in the first, starter
Brooke York settled down and kept the Phoenix off the scoreboard for the next three innings. A single with two outs in the fifth was followed by an error by Speth in right field to allow the tying run to score.
Neither team threatened for the next two innings as the game went in to extras.
In the eighth, the Jaguars loaded the bases with one out after Bedrick was hit by a pitch,
Jaida Speth singled and Gilbert reached on a fielder's choice. With the go-ahead run just 60 feet away, Tori Sivert popped up to shortstop and
Jennah Speth grounded out to third to end the inning.
Green Bay loaded the bases on York with the first three batters reaching. The freshman earned the first out of the inning as Gilbert threw out the runner at home on a ground ball. A fly out to short left did not allow the runner to score after the second out. York got a fly ball to right that could have sent the game to the ninth but an error allowed the winning run to come home.
York finished the game allowing just two earned runs, five hits and struck out two batters in the longest outing of her career.
IUPUI 3 – Green Bay 2 F/9
The Jags came through with the big hit in the second game of the day, beating Green Bay in nine innings to close out the season with a win.
Hailey Pop delivered a single to bring home the go-ahead run in the eighth inning and the Jags were able to hold on to secure the victory.
Jaida Speth tallied two hits to lead the Jaguar offense and seven other Jags notched hits.
Jennah Speth picked up the win with a complete game performance, allowing just one earned run on seven hits and striking out seven batters.
IUPUI jumped on top early as
Morgan Gilbert tripled to right center to lead off the game. Two batters later,
Jordan Barnes hit a sacrifice fly to right to score Gilbert.
Back-to-back errors in the bottom of the second helped Green Bay get on the board and tie the game 1-1. In the third, a two-out double down the right field line scored the second run of the game for the Phoenix to put them on top 2-1.
The Jaguars took advantage of Green Bay's own error in the fifth as
Maicey Bedrick reached to start the inning on a fielding error by the shortstop. After a strikeout,
Jaida Speth doubled to left, scoring Bedrick and again tying the game.
With the game all square,
Jennah Speth then had to work to keep Green Bay off the board. In the fifth, a walk and hit by pitch put two runners on with no one out. Speth got the next three batters out to end the threat.
In the sixth, Green Bay threatened again with a two-out rally after Speth struck out the first two batters. A single and two walks loaded the bases but Speth got a groundout to again keep the Phoenix off the board.
Neither team threatened in the seventh as the game went to extras. In the top of the eighth, IUPUI got
Jaida Speth to second after a single and sac bunt but a ground out and line out kept IUPUI off the board.
Green Bay managed a two-out single in the eighth but Speth got another strikeout to send the game to the ninth.
Three-straight singles by IUPUI kicked off the ninth to load the bases but an infield fly put one out on the board. Pop then stepped to the plate and singled to right center to score
Bailey Johnson and break the tie.
Needing three outs for the win, Speth set down the Phoenix in order to capture the win for IUPUI.
