CHICAGO – IUPUI softball went to extras in game two of the doubleheader against UIC but could not pull out a win against the Flames on Tuesday (April 6).
The Jags used a late rally to force the game in to extras but an error doomed IUPUI in the ninth, helping the Flames get the winning run across. The Jags fell to the Flames 6-1 in the first game of the day.
UIC 6 – IUPUI 1
Jennah Speth finished the game 2-for-3 but the rest of the Jags managed just two hits as IUPUI lost game one against UIC 6-1. IUPUI's lone run of the game came in the sixth inning as IUPUI was down 5-0. It was all Speth to get the Jags on the board as she hit a one-out double before stealing second and scoring on a wild pitch in the next at bat.
IUPUI had a chance to break through earlier in the game as
Hailey Pop led off the fifth with a double and Tori Sivert reached on a fielding error. After Sivert stole second, IUPUI had runners on second and third with no outs but three infield groundouts ended any threats.
UIC got the long ball going against starter
Lexi Lucas, scoring four runs on three home runs. The Flames hit solo home runs in the first and fourth innings before a two-run home run in the fifth pushed the lead to 5-1.
UIC 3 – IUPUI 2 F/9
In the third nine-inning game of the season for IUPUI, the Jags ended up on the wrong side of the outcome for the second-straight time.
After falling behind 2-0 in the second inning, IUPUI got runners to second in the each of the next three innings but was never able to get a run across. The Jags finally got to the Flames in the sixth as
Jennah Speth walked and moved to third on a single by
Jordan Barnes.
Ryleigh Marsh ran for Barnes and stole second.
Abbey Haas singled to center to bring home Speth and cut the lead to 2-1.
With
Lauren Youngblood running for Haas, the Jags pulled off the double steal with Youngblood stealing second and Marsh taking home on the throw to tie the game. Youngblood moved to third on the play but was thrown out at home on a groundball in the next at bat.
Jennah Speth, who was impressive in the circle, striking out five and allowing just two earned runs, put the Flames down in order in the next two innings to send the game to extras.
In the eighth,
Jaylin Calvert moved to third on a wild pitch with two outs but was stranded on a groundout. UIC threatened in the bottom of the inning, getting a runner to third with two outs but Speth picked up a strikeout to end the frame.
After going down in order in the top of the ninth, a single for UIC was followed by an error on a pickoff attempt to move the runner to second. Two batters later, a single to center brought home the winning run.
