INDIANAPOLIS – IUPUI women's basketball's bid for a trip to the NCAA Tournament came up short with a 53-41 loss to Wright State in the Horizon League Championship.
Macee Williams and
Rachel McLimore earned spots on the All-Tournament team for IUPUI.
IUPUI was led by Williams, who finished with a game-high 28 points and 13 rebounds. Williams was the only Jaguar to finish in double figures as
Rachel McLimore was second on the team with seven points. No other Jaguar had more than two points in the game as Wright State held IUPUI to just 25 percent shooting in the contest.
The Jags fell behind 8-2 early but battled back in the first quarter, with baskets from
Sydney Roule and Williams before tying the game at 10 following buckets from Perkins and McLimore. IUPUI ended the quarter with free throws from Williams and McLimore to take a 14-12 lead after one.
Williams scored two-straight baskets for the Jags to put IUPUI up 18-14 early in the second and the Jags took a six point lead after another McLimore basket. Wright State would cut the lead to one with two minutes to play in the half before McLimore added a free throw to put IUPUI up 25-23 at the break.
It became the Williams show to start the second half for IUPUI as the senior scored seven-straight points, including a three-point play to put IUPUI up by seven three minutes in to the game. After a three by Wright State's Angel Baker, Williams responded with two more buckets, giving IUPUI a 36-30 lead with 5:34 left in the third quarter.
From that point on it was all Wright State. Baker hit two more threes to give the Raiders a 38-36 lead as Wright State would go on a 16-2 run that spanned from 4:38 in the third quarter to 2:44 in the fourth quarter. During that run, Williams' two free throws were the only points the Jags would score. After Wright State pushed its lead to 10 for the first time, Williams would hit a layup for IUPUI's first field goal in over 12 minutes of game time.
IUPUI had a hard time stopping Tournament MVP Baker, who led Wright State with 23 points on 10-for-16 shooting, including 3-for-5 from deep. On the flip side, the Jags could not find any rhythm from beyond the arc, going 0-for-15 from three in the game.
