INDIANAPOLIS – IUPUI battled against one of the top teams in the Horizon League but were swept in a double header against Wright State on Tuesday (March 2).
WRIGHT STATE 3 – IUPUI 0
In the first match against the Raiders, the Jags were led by
Allie Pogue with seven kills but IUPUI hit just .045 as a team in a 3-0 (25-15, 25-16, 25-21) loss to Wright State.
Millai Madison was second on the team with six kills and
Emily Alan added five.
Darragh Dixon collected 20 assists in the match.
On defense, IUPUI finished with 55 digs and had three different players record a dig.
Rachel Funkhouser led the Jags with 14 digs while
Rhiannon Schuenemann had 11 and Dixon had 10. The Jags matched Wright State at the net with five blocks.
Corrissa Remter was the top net presence for the Jags with four blocks, while Madison added three.
After falling behind early and dropping the first set, the Jags started set two up 3-1 and took a 6-3 lead after a kill by Pogue, an ace by
Alli Cook and a Wright State error. The Raiders used a run to go up 10-8 but IUPUI responded with kills by Remter and Pogue to knot the set back up. Wright State would jump out in front again with another run and IUPUI was not able to claw back in to the set, falling 25-16 in the second frame.
Early in the third, Wright State took an 11-6 lead but the Jags showed some fire and climbed back in to the match. The Jags got a couple of kills from Remter and Remter also teamed with Madison and
Maddie Haines for blocks during the run. After a service ace from Funkhouser and a kill by Madison, the Jags had knotted the match at 14. The Raiders quickly opened up a three-point lead but IUPUI hung around, getting back to within one multiple times.
After an error by the Raiders made it 22-21 for Wright State, IUPUI had a chance to force a fourth set but gave up three-straight points as Wright State closed out the match.
WRIGHT STATE 3 – IUPUI 0
Pogue led IUPUI's offense again in game two, finishing with 10 kills but the Jags could not pull out a set win, falling 3-0 (25-22, 25-11, 25-17) to Wright State. The Jags hit well in the first set, hitting .227 as a team but struggled to get the offense going in the final two sets in the loss.
Madison was second in the team with seven kills, followed by Remter with six and Alan with five. Dixon finished the game with 28 assists.
IUPUI was led on the back end by 11 digs from both Schuenemann and Cook. The Jags finished with just two blocks compared to 11 from the Raiders.
The first set was a tight battle with the Jags breaking a 9-9 tie with a kill by Pogue. IUPUI took advantage of an error by Wright State and followed that with an ace from Schuenemann and a block by Madison and Alan to take a 13-9 lead. The lead hit 15-10 after kills from Pogue and Dixon.
After a timeout, Wright State made a run, scoring seven of the next nine points to tie the set at 17. The score went back and forth with Wright State taking a 23-21 lead after winning a challenge. IUPUI pulled within one after a kill by Pogue but back-to-back kills from Wright State ended the set.
In both the second and third sets, IUPUI kept it close for the first part of the set, but runs by Wright State in the middle of the set separated the score leading to the Wright State win.
