SOUR SHOOTING LEADS TO LOSS IN YOUNGSTOWN, 77-70

IUPUI shoots just 34 percent as Jaguars have three-game winning streak snapped

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - The IUPUI basketball team had its three-game winning streak snapped as the Jaguars shot just 34 percent from the floor and fell at Youngstown State, 77-70. Marcus Burk led three Jaguars in double-digits with 24 points on an uncharacteristic 8-of-20 shooting night and Elyjah Goss chipped in an impressive double-double with 21 points and 15 rebounds. Sophomore Nathan McClure tallied a season-high 16 points, including connecting on all eight of his free throw attempts.

Youngstown State (14-11, 9-11 HL) shot 50 percent from the floor and led the majority of the night as Naz Bohannon paced four Penguins in double-digits with 23 points. Darius Quisenberry and Shemar Rathan-Mayes finished with 14 points apiece and Garrett Covington closed with 11.

"The guys had a very emotional weekend," head coach Byron Rimm II said. "They fought tooth and nail until the end. There's just some things we need to work on before the (Horizon League) tournament. One thing I can say about our guys is that they will never quit.

"I expect great things this week in the Horizon League Tournament."

A day after coming from behind for an impressive road victory, IUPUI (8-9, 7-9 HL) was forced to play from behind for much of Saturday's contest. After the Jaguars built an early 14-7 lead, YSU scored 24 of the game's next 31 points to build a 31-21 advantage. The Penguins extended the lead to 11 before IUPUI closed within 41-34 by halftime.

The Jags were held scoreless for more than four minutes to start the second half until Burk swished a floater at the 15:53 mark to cut YSU's lead back to 46-36. The lead reached double-digits on a number of occasions and was still at 10 with 5:17 to play when Quisenberry swished a wing jumper.

However, IUPUI had a final counterpunch in store, ultimately sneaking within four points with 1:48 to play. Goss did the bulk of the scoring work during that stretch and Azariah Seay knocked in a key triple from the top of the key at the 3:42 mark. A Goss putback with 1:48 left made the score 68-64 and the Jags had an opportunity to get even closer with 1:20 left. The Jags forced a Covington miss and DePersia snagged the rebound underneath. However, his long outlet pass to Seay sailed just high of target and gave possession back to the hosts.

The Penguins proceeded to make 7-of-8 free throws in the final 80 seconds to ice the victory.

The Jaguars shooting touch from a night prior seemed to escape as Goss (7-of-13) was the lone IUPUI player to finish at better than 50 percent from the field. Jaylen Minnett, who missed the previous game due to injury, finished just 1-of-10 from the floor and 1-of-9 from three-point range. Collectively, IUPUI was just 5-of-23 (21.7 percent) from three and 1-of-10 in the second half.

YSU was just 3-of-12 from deep and far more reliant on scoring inside as they finished with a 34-22 edge in points in the paint. In addition, the Penguins cashed in on 22-of-26 (84.6 percent) free throw attempts while IUPUI was 23-of-30 (76.7 percent).

With the weekend split, IUPUI captured its first win over YSU since 2000 and just the second win in program history over the Penguins.

The Jags will open the Horizon League Tournament on Thursday, Feb. 25 as the No. 9 seed and travel to No. 8 Milwaukee in the opening round. The winner will advance to the quarterfinals round, which will be played at campus sites on Tuesday, Mar. 2.
