JAGUARS UNABLE TO RALLY ON THE ROAD IN #HLMBB TOURNEY OPENER

No. 9 IUPUI falls on the road at No. 8 Milwaukee, 84-72 on Thursday night (Feb. 25)

MILWAUKEE, Wisc. - Senior Elyjah Goss recorded a major double-double of 20 points and 17 rebounds and Jaylen Minnett tallied a game-high 23 points but IUPUI fell in the opening round of the 2021 Horizon League Tournament to Milwaukee on Thursday night (Feb. 25), 84-72.

Te'Jon Lucas led four Milwaukee players in double-digits with 22 points and DeAndre Gholston contributed 20 in the victory. Amir Allen had a double-double of his own with 13 points and 10 boards and Josh Thomas also netted 13 points.

IUPUI (8-10) committed too many fouls (28) and too many turnovers (16) to secure a victory on the road and advance to Tuesday's quarterfinals round. Host Milwaukee outscored IUPUI 24-15 at the foul line and held IUPUI to just 44 percent shooting while making 47 percent at the opposite end.

Minnett and Marcus Burk were harassed into a combined 10-of-31 shooting effort.

Milwaukee (9-11) stole momentum with a quick 7-0 burst late in the first half when Gholston hit a three and then the Panthers scored back-to-back transition buckets to turn a three-point lead into a 42-32 lead in roughly 30 seconds. The Panthers led 47-34 at the break and quickly pushed the lead out to 17 in the early stages of the second half.

As expected, IUPUI methodically chipped away, largely behind the interior presence of Goss. Burk made back-to-back jumpers to make it a two-possession game with 6:30 to play and Bobby Harvey cut Milwaukee's lead back to five with 5:15 left.

However, the Jaguars were unable to get needed defensive stops down the stretch to get any closer. Milwaukee got points on nine of its final 10 possessions of the game as part of a 16-2 run that blew the game open late. Minnett hit two threes in the final minute to cut into the final margin.

Minnett, the program's all-time leader in threes made, moved past 1,400 points in his IUPUI career in the season finale and added three more triples to his career total. He scored 15 of his game-high 23 points before halftime and also had five rebounds. Goss continued his torrid play of late, recording his tenth double-double of the campaign moving his rebound total to 880 all-time. It marked his fourth career game of 20 points or more, three of which have come in his final five outings.

Burk closed with 12 points and ends his collegiate career with 1,848 points between Campbell and IUPUI.

Harvey finished with eight points off the Jaguars' bench and Mike DePersia finished with five.
