INDIANAPOLIS - Senior
Azariah Seay had a game-high 20 points on 8-of-11 shooting and
B.J. Maxwell tallied 13 points off the IUPUI bench as the Jaguars knocked off Anderson University, 74-60, inside Indiana Farmers Coliseum on Wednesday morning (Nov. 3). The Jaguars hosted their annual NCAA Readers Become Leaders game and played in front of 2,110 fans, largely from nearby elementary schools.
Maurice Knight finished with 17 points and 11 boards for Anderson and Austin Lyons finished with 16 points, including three threes.
First-year head coach
Matt Crenshaw's team overpowered its Division III opponent, outrebounding the Ravens by a 40-34 margin and holding the opponents to just 41 percent from the floor and 4-of-17 (23.5 percent) from three-point range. He also strategically spread minutes amongst 11 players in the rotation while methodically pulling away to a 14-point win. The Jags led by as many as 22 in the closing minutes and shot 58 percent from the field after halftime, keyed by Seay and Maxwell. The duo combined to hit 14-of-20 field goal attempts and five treys on Wednesday.
"I really liked how we shared the ball and looked to make the extra pass. We had guys turning down good shots in an effort to get great shots for their teammates," Crenshaw said. "I thought we competed well on the defensive end.
"We're going to continue to improve defensively, but I really liked how we competed today."
After a slow start, Maxwell put IUPUI ahead 14-6 after draining a wing three after
Nathan McClure tracked down an offensive rebound. The lead finally hit double-digits at the 6:27 mark of the first half when Seay deposited a triple off a
Bakari LaStrap find. Later, Seay pushed the lead to 19 with another trey before Anderson scored the final six points of the half to make it 34-21 at the break.
The Ravens clawed within seven early in the second half when Lyons splashed a transition three from the right wing, but IUPUI countered with a Maxwell pull-up to quell any momentum. Each time Anderson threatened, Seay and Maxwell answered as they combined to hit 9-of-10 shots after halftime.
Freshman
Boston Stanton III piloted the offense for much of the second half, delivering five of his game-high seven assists after intermission. Collectively, IUPUI finished with 16 assists against just nine turnovers. LaStrap added four assists in just over 17 minutes
IUPUI was well balanced behind Seay and Maxwell as
KJ Pruitt finished with nine points and two steals and
Chuks Isitua added seven points and five boards.
Mike DePersia closed with six points and
Dimitar Pandev had four points and seven rebounds off the bench.
The Jaguars will officially open the regular season next Tuesday (Nov. 11) when they face Butler at 6:45 p.m. inside Hinkle Fieldhouse. The game will be broadcast on FS1.
