TURNOVERS PILE UP IN 65-59 LOSS TO TEXAS A&M CORPUS CHRISTI

Jaguars turn it over 25 times in Tuesday's defeat

SAN ANTONIO - The IUPUI basketball team struggled to take care of the basketball as miscues led to misfortune as the Jaguars fell to Texas A&M Corpus Christi 65-59 inside UTSA's Convocation Center on Tuesday night (Nov. 16). The Jags turned it over 25 times leading to 21 TAMUCC points in an otherwise closely contested affair at the UTSA Tournament.

Graduate transfer B.J. Maxwell led the Jaguars with 14 points on 4-of-12 shooting and Nathan McClure added 10 points and seven boards in the loss. Isaac Mushila scored 12 of his game-high 16 points in the second half and De'Lazarus Keys contributed 11 points for the victors.

IUPUI (0-4) led the bulk of the first half, shooting 56 percent overall and hitting 4-of-8 from three before the break. McClure staked IUPUI to a 21-15 lead when he stroked a three after having grabbed a defensive board at the other end. The Islanders (2-1) scored the final five points of the half to pull even at 27 all at the break.

TAMUCC scored the first seven points of the second half before Chuks Isitua broke the scoring drought with a putback at the 15:40 mark. The Islanders ultimately built a double-digit lead near the midpoint of the half when Simeon Fryer drilled a three, but IUPUI battled back down the stretch. Still down 10 with 3:24 remaining, IUPUI had chances to make it a one-possession game in the closing minutes.

Four Maxwell free throws cut the advantage back to 61-55 with 1:02 left and the Jags got a defensive stop, but Bobby Harvey misfired on a triple with 39 seconds left. With IUPUI forced to foul, the Islanders sealed the game at the free throw line.

IUPUI was unable to overcome a collection of careless mistakes as four different Jaguars had at least four turnovers. And while IUPUI cut down the turnovers after halftime, the offense dried up as the Jags shot just 28 percent overall in the second half and 3-of-17 (17.6 percent) from three. For the game, IUPUI outshot TAMUCC 38.3 percent to 36.4 percent and outrebounded the Islanders, 41-36. TAMUCC outscored IUPUI in the paint by a 32-14 margin and was able to get out in transition for 17 fast break points.

Azariah Seay came off the IUPUI bench to score nine points in 19 minutes and Mike DePersia contributed seven points and three boards. KJ Pruitt closed with five points, seven boards and four assists.

IUPUI was forced to play small for much of the night as Jonah Carrasco was whistled for two quick fouls to start the game and Isitua was plagued by foul trouble for much of the evening. Dimitar Pandev was pressed into his most extensive action of the year and responded with two points and two boards in 12 minutes of work.

IUPUI will cap its three-game trip to the UTSA Tournament on Wednesday (Nov. 17) when the Jaguars take on the host Roadrunners at 4:30 p.m. Central (5:30 Eastern) inside the Convocation Center.
